After the farmer's market, my car made a random left turn into the parking lot where the good book thrift store is so I figured I might as well go in and spend $8.48.
I have seen the AMC series of The Terror twice so I am excited/intimidated by this book. I think I recall reading that it's rather different though I'm unsure. @curliestofcrowns any insight on this? Have you read it?
For months all I saw were raves for Theo of Golden but lately I have seen more people saying it's corny so we'll see about that one, but for a buck okay.
I already have that R. Davies book as part of a trilogy volume so that was a mistake. Still it's handier to read that than the chonker so it may be a good way to get me started on it.
I did put back 2 hardbacks so I saved $3 +tax. One I already had in paperback but was unsure, the other was Clown Town of the Slow Horses series, but I haven't read any yet so I left that for someone else to enjoy (or resell).

Dang I was doing so well, I have been to #5 but still have little sense of where it is. (actually I've been to 2, 4, and 5)

Danggg I could have easily gotten in the 900s if I'd gone with my instinct on #4. I have a friend who lives there too!
None of these were "easy"!!!
Also, I just didn't care today

Smoke isn't too bad this morning, yet anyway. It was not great bob last night. I have a couple air purifiers thank goodness. But even by late last night the stench was creeping in, so I left my bathroom fan on overnight for whatever that was worth.
I am really tired of the disregard people have for their dogwalker/sitter. It's like driving behind people who don't use their turn signals. As long as you know what you're doing, I don't get the benefit of this knowledge until the last minute, so I can't plan better. It's rare I have plans but my sister just asked if I wanted to join her and BIL tomorrow at a music venue right up the street from me, and maybe for dinner before. I had nothing on my schedule for the evening so I was like sure, why not. I spend so little time with my family, or with anyone at all besides Other People's Pets, I say yes when I can. Then I remembered I'd agreed to do a couple dog visits to a client who texted me before putting in the request with my boss. I texted her yesterday evening to see if she'd put in the requests and she still hadn't decided on times and how many visits and to give her an hour and that was that. Nothing from my boss and now I have stuff I want to do which probably shouldn't interfere? Based on the time frame she said they'd be away? But for fucks sake lady, my boss is busy too, not just you, if you want me to do this thing tomorrow, she has to put it in the schedule. So tired of this shit. Also the morning-of cancellations with the dog walks, which I'm grateful for on days like this but can't you decide more than 5 hours ahead? And there's only a late cancel fee if it's a scheduled visit, not someone who has an ongoing daily dogwalking agreement.
My dog walk was cancelled again today thank Gord.
I won another Goodreads Giveaway, this one is Dodge City by Patrick DeWitt, about a draft dodger. I still have not received the copy of Walter Mosley's Ghalen I won. No one to contact about it either. Oh well, easy (Rawlins) come easy go. (It's not an Easy Rawlins book though, as far as I know)
Appropriately, I guess, I started reading A Short Stay in Hell last night. It is indeed short (just over 100 pages) so I may finish it today. I also started another one from Libby, that was in my to-read tag, called Indelicacy, which is about 175 pages. I can read it while I am petting the cat at the 45 minute visit I will be doing thru the 20th. I should have figured that out 2 weeks ago but oh well. It's so hard though on Libby to tell how long an e-book is! It was pissing me off but I was lucky this one is under 200 pages. I already have too many books on my TBR but in July I am reading shorties, and one longie (the Ben Franklin bio I'm currently 14% into). The beginning of the month I was reading Dèy, which was not super short (about 260pp) but I was slow getting thru it, but now I should be able to blow thru some of the stack of shorties every couple days.
Anyway coffee is beckoning. Maybe I can make myself do something constructive (inside) today besides reading and scrolling the internet. It could happen!
Oh hey, it's Skype a Scientist again, here to fund science education projects with COOL ART.
Introducing SHRIMP CITY!
Look cool as hell in while talking about shrimp science with your friends.
For example: 🦐 Mantis Shrimp (who punch so fast they create pressure voids in the water that collapse to produce shockwaves, heat, and even a flash of light!) 🦐 Pistol Shrimp (Instead of a punch, pistol shrimp create their shockwaves using the snap of their claws!) 🦐 Hermit Crabs (who aren't "true" crabs, but Shrimp City is an inclusive town) 🦐Yeti Crabs (who live in Shrimp City's sister city, Hydrothermal Ventopolis, where they grow bacteria on their hairy arms that they lick off for a snack!) 🦐 Insects (who are not shrimps per se, but did you know recent research suggests that insects group with the crustaceans?? You may have heard that shrimps is bugs, but nay… bugs is shrimp).
These shirts were designed by Philly designer The 666 Cat!
What kind of science education are you funding by buying a shirt, you ask? Well, lots of stuff, but here's a recent example:
Here's a mural all about local biodiversity that we painted in collaboration with a Philly public elementary school with local artist NDA!
We got the kids from the school to help us paint it and everything! These projects are educational and cute as hell.
So hey. Get a shirt <3
UPDATE: as of Sunday morning, we've sold 271 shirts. To fully fund our fall mural series we need to sell 1100. Each mural costs about 330 shirts (this is a goofy way to fund good projects, but hey, that's life in the 2026 hellscape babbyyy).
This means we are 60 shirts away from our first Philly Bug mural being funded. So whaddya waiting for?? Get a shrimp shirt!
and if you are like me and white is not your color.... can I interest you in a plant native plants
or a biology is bigger than binaries?
This is true, it's all going to the same place
Update to the update: 12 more shirts to go to fund mural #1
782 to fund the whole project. But hey! That's major progress! Thank you to everyone who bought a shirt or reposted this. I'm a lucky dog to be able to do cool projects like this.
Just did inventory on all shirts!
Would love to clear out as many as we can because:
Squid shirts arrive next week (hell yeah)
The more shirts we sell, the more projects we can do to connect people with science

Wow! Such a robust response to this question, I love it! I guess I came up with a good one. Maybe someone can do another ask with a US state.
For me it was Belgium. I can't think of another one because I usually go nonstop or just thru countries I've been to.
