Historia De Un Amor: Chapter 1
“Are you out of your mind?! Are you?! What the hell were you thinking?!” CEO Kim Hakseung shouted as he threw today’s newspaper on the table.
The man was wearing a light brown suit with a dark blue button-down shirt decorated with a handkerchief in his pocket, making him look like a rich D&G model. Although he was close to forty, he did not look his age due to his well-maintained skin and muscular build highlighted even through his luxurious suit. He shouted violently, messing up his hair which he got fixed this morning at the hair salon in Cheongdam-dong, where non-members had to wait a month even if they made a reservation.
“How many times is this?! Huh?! The last time you almost got caught Mr. Cha barely managed to steer the reporters away! What did you say then?!”
“It will never happen again.” The man, who was leaning deeply against the dark brown sofa, replied with a smile. It was a smile as refreshing as the scent of a freshly peeled orange. The bright-colored hair made the man’s charm stand out more. “And I won’t get caught.” It sounded confident. As if everything in the world was in the palm of his hand.
“You won’t get caught?! Can’t you see this with your own eyes?!” CEO Kim Hakseung said, pointing to the article with the initials at the corner of page 16 of the entertainment page. It was about top star ‘S’ enjoying a secret date with a new actress inside a car.
“Who would read an article on page 16?”
“I would read it, that’s who!”
“CEO, you’re reading it because it’s your job. No one is reading that.” It wasn’t wrong, but CEO Kim Hakseung punched his chest. What he wanted to punch was actually the man sitting in front of him, but he only hit his heart repeatedly. The man sitting on the sofa looked down at the newspaper with an interested face as if he was reading another person’s scandal.
“How can a human being like that be the number one celebrity without any antis? Oh, my.” It sounded as if he didn’t like that fact.
“Then you should be the first anti-fan.” CEO Kim Hakseung’s fist trembled at the man’s words.
Lee Wooyeon, who started his career in the entertainment industry with an independent film a few years ago, was an actor who was on a winning streak without a single slump. For the first time, he received more spotlight than the main character in a drama where he played the supporting role, and was immediately cast as the main character in a film directed by Park Seong-Han, drawing public attention. After the movie was released, he did not expect his stock price to fall because his acting skills were excellent and had a unique almost strange charm that made it difficult to determine nationality and age.
Having won the Rookie of the Year award and the Best Actor award that year, he reached the top only a year after entering the entertainment industry. It was the law of the entertainment industry to have ups and downs, but this did not apply to Lee Wooyeon. Every drama he filmed exceeded 40% in viewer ratings. Every scenario he chose, hit the jackpot and the consumption effect of the advertisement he filmed made advertisers dance.
There was also an editorial published in an economic journal that the products he advertises has received overwhelming support from consumers, especially female consumers, and that the brand Lee Wooyeon itself exists.
People liked Lee Wooyeon. Everyone liked his ingenuity, his rarely seen cute appearance, a beautiful smile that revealed his perfect teeth, excellent acting and singing skills, as well as praise from those who have worked with him at least once. Women especially loved his eyes. His eyes were loved greatly, with the deep futility of an old man who knew all of life’s history and an innocence that was not worthy of his age at the same time. Some of his fans say Lee Wooyeon’s eyes should be designated as a national treasure and that if he dies, he should preserve the organ by any means.
Opinions were divided on Lee Wooyeon’s life. Little was known about his background except for the fact that he was a graduate of Princeton University. Interesting hypotheses such as the grandson of a famous foreign company, the illegitimate son of a famous actress, etc. have been circulated, but nothing has been confirmed. It was surprising for CEO Kim Hakseung that even such a mystery acted as his charm.
However, it did not mean that Wooyeon had no shortcomings. He liked women. Although this scandal has been avoided, CEO Kim was still concerned it wouldn’t be long before he occupied the front page of a sports newspaper if he was always like this. Lee Wooyeon always acted in his own way whether he liked it or not.
“Please live carefully. What are you going to do when your celebrity life ends?”
“Well, I’m still thinking about what to do next.”
“Why did I trust you and take you in?” JN Entertainment CEO Kim Hakseung often recalled the day Wooyeon visited the company and made a bold request to debut as an actor. Because of Wooyeon’s face, which was too good to be dismissed as a madman, he called him back again when he was being chased out by the security.
“This won’t be a problem,” Wooyeon said, looking through the article at the end of the newspaper. There was no doubt about the future in his smiling eyes. Wooyeon was always like that. In his eyes, there was an unfounded determination.
“Of course there won’t be. This article is on the front page.” CEO Kim Hakseung said, spreading the front page of the sports newspaper back to the table. “You might have been on the front page if it weren’t for this.” There was rather shocking content decorating the headline.
“Girl idol. Jumped from the agency building. Suicide again?” Mr. Cha, who was sitting opposite Wooyeon, muttered while reading the front page with a pale face.
An article stating a female idol died from jumping of the roof of a building early that morning was decorated with all kinds of provocative phrases. Wooyeon sat there with a disinterested face.
“And as of yesterday, manager Kim resigned.”
“Again?” Mr. Cha asked surprised.
“Yes, again, again and again.” CEO Kim Hakseung grinded his teeth. It was already the eighth time this year. The life of a manager with an irregular life and unclear income is not very long. If you work under a large entertainment company however, it is called The God’s Workplace in the manager industry because you receive not only the four major insurances but also bonuses regularly. Among them, JN provides the best annual salary and treatment in the industry, so it has been crowded with people who want to join there as a manager. There were many people who dreamed of setting up their own entertainment business later because working for a good company naturally increases networking and skill learning. The greater the popularity of the celebrity, the more it gave the manager power. The better the celebrity he was in charge of, the prouder he felt and worked harder.
The fact that Lee Wooyeon, who is the best in Korea, continues to change managers meant that he was the problem after all. However, he was a celebrity famous for his good personality. Lee Wooyeon, who has been in the top spot for several years as the celebrity best suited for endorsements, was well-received by those around him. He was never late, and he was always polite to the staff. It was common for people to be humble when they were rookies, but as they became more popular, get overly cocky and self-centered. In the case of Lee Wooyeon, he was always polite and was popular among the people he worked with.
“This is all because of your dirty personality!”
“No way,” Wooyeon replied with a smile. He looked so gentle and good-looking. However, CEO Kim knew the gutter-like personality hidden under the angel-like mask.
“How did you bully him this time?”
“Me? I never did. Did Manager Kim say I did? Did he say he was leaving because I bullied him?”
“…” When Manager Kim quit, he did not say a word blaming Wooyeon. He just disappeared after saying that he was incompetent and lacking, and that he would no longer be able to work as a manager.
“Hmm...” Wooyeon hummed, taking out his cell phone with a long, elegant finger. As soon as he saw Wooyeon, who looked like he knew why he quit, CEO Kim cursed a thousand times.
Managers who were in charge of Lee Wooyeon resigned for the same reason. They said that they felt they were not good enough to take on the role of Lee Wooyeon’s manager, the best star in Korea, and said they were sorry. Once or twice wouldn’t be strange, but it’s been eight times this year alone, so CEO Kim couldn’t help but suspect Wooyeon. Surely that devilish man did something behind the scenes to make the innocent managers quit. How on earth did he cleverly manipulate these grown men?
Wooyeon sighed, “please don’t day things like... I bully my managers until they quit, sir.”
“Then tell me why they all say the same thing when they hand in their notice”
“Well, I don’t know that either.” In fact, Wooyeon was not a good person. Although he deceived people with his good looks and soft tone, ‘a bad personality’ wasn’t enough to describe his true self. It was like that even now. Wooyeon did not express any emotion even when it was reported that a person in the same entertainment industry committed suicide.
“By the way, did they give any reason for why she killed herself?”
Mr. Cha read the article with his tongue-in-cheek. He clenched his tongue and shook his head sadly. Still then, Wooyeon was still texting on his cell phone with an indifferent face. “Anyways, it’s such a shame. At such a young age.”
“Even though there is an order in which we come into this life, there is no order for when we leave it.” Both men look at Wooyeon, “even if it’s a shame, she’s already dead. There’s nothing we can do.”
“Tsk, an entertainment industry colleague has fallen to her death... Are you that heartless?”
“Please, I said that to tell you both not to be so heartbroken about it.”
If you didn’t know about Lee Wooyeon, he has a voice that could fool you. However, CEO Kim Hakseung knew the trashy soul behind the mask. Wooyeon dramatically puts his hand to his heart as he furrowed his eyebrows...
It was a pitiful tone that made it hard to believe that it was the same person as the person who was discussing the order of dying just before.
CEO Kim and Mr. Cha were the only people who knew Wooyeon’s true self. The two also knew that the voice of Lee Wooyeon, who touched their hearts just now, was all made up.
This was Lee Wooyeon’s personality.
Mr. Cha Hyungyu was busy smoking a cigarette. He came here after CEO Kim’s order to closely monitor Lee Wooyeon, but the funeral home was very uncomfortable. Reporters lingering near the funeral home trying to catch a story, and female idols who were secretly fighting in the midst of this were also tired.
It’s been over ten years since he’d worked in this industry, but at times like this, he felt skeptical about the place. He felt a vibration in his pocket. Mr. Cha put his cigarette in his mouth and pulled out his cell phone.
“Yes. This is Cha Hyungyu. Oh yes. I’m in front of the funeral home’s front door, so come over here. Call me when you arrive. Alright.”
After the call, he put out the cigarette he was holding. It seems that Wooyeon’s manager, who was supposed to start work today, arrived.
“Tsk, I have no luck.”
Lee Wooyeon had a bad personality. The only people who knew the true nature of that were CEO Kim and himself. At first, Mr. Cha also thought that Lee Wooyeon was an angel that could never exist. Seeing his consistently sincere, polite, and humble behavior, he told other celebrities working in the same agency to watch and learn from Lee Wooyeon. It was by accident that they discovered the dark secrets hidden in the angel’s skin.
Cha Hyungyu took out a new cigarette from the pack and lit it. Poisonous cigarette smoke rushed into his lungs.
“What. Oh, it’s Lee Wooyeon.”
“It’s a celebrity, a celebrity. The good-looking Lee Wooyeon.”
As the waiter opened the door, the people outside seemed to be able to see the scene inside the room. Two men passing by suddenly raised their heads and spoke. It was rare for drunk people to stay quiet when they saw a celebrity.
When CEO Kim offered to buy alcohol to commemorate the successful end of a drama he had filmed a while ago, it was situations like this that Wooyeon expressed his concern about. But the CEO said he would prepare a good room, so he should come. Because it’s the CEO who said this, Wooyeon reluctantly followed.
“You only go the set, your house and the gym... What the hell do you do for fun?” CEO Kim asked with a drink in hand. “You’ve got to let yourself breathe every noe and then to be more approachable!”
“A celebrity?? It’s Lee Wooyeon!” A grown man stumbled into their private room. “What the fuck is that drama you’re doing... You’re Lee Wooyeon from the Wind’s Whatchamacallit, right?”
“Sir! You can’t do this,” the waiter tried and failed to grab the man’s attention.
“Oh! Seeing the real thing, you’re really good looking.” Wooyeon sighed at the drunkard’s remark and plastered on a smile. “My niece is a fan of yours. Gimme a few autographs... and some pictures. No, no, gimme your number.” The man was red in the face and stumbling. Wooyeon got up to address the man personally. “I’ll get my niece to give you a call later.”
Wooyeon got up from his seat without showing any displeasure and reached to shake his hand. “Another time perhaps,” Wooyeon said politely as he bowed his head.
“Huh?! What? Are you not going to gimme the autograph?” The man shoved Wooyeon’s shoulder as the waiter tries to grab hold of him. “You think you’re so fucking great? Huh? When you’re just a rookie!”
CEO Kim’s expression darkened at the bleak atmosphere. The waiter hurriedly tried to get the men out of the room, but to no avail. Now everyone is standing as the argument became more heated.
“Is signing an autograph so hard?” The nervous waiter’s weak voice kept trying to get the drunk man out of the room.
“There are guests using this room, please leave,” he said in a sweat.
“Fucking bastard! Who do you think you are, ordering me out?!” He turned his head back to Wooyeon. “He thinks he’s so great he can’t sign an autograph?”
The CEO raised his hands trying to calm the situation, “Now, now, settle down... Excuse him. He’s had too much to drink,” he gestured to Wooyeon, “and is in no condition to sign autographs. Please understand.”
“He’s too drunk, huh?’ The man grabs an empty glass from the table. “Then he should pour me a glass. Even if he’s drunk, he’s gotta be able to pour.”
Wooyeon’s face hesitated for a moment before grabbing a bottle and poured in the glass.
“That’s it. Let’s taste a drink poured by a fucking celeb.” The man smiled as the liquid trickled into the glass. “I’ll drink this and head out.” He looked back up to Wooyeon and glared. ‘Hey,” in a split second, Wooyeon was drenched with the liquor. “Rude bastard.” Wooyeon didn’t move an inch as the waiter was finally able to escort the man out the room.
“I-I’ll bring you a towel!”
The CEO sighed, “are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“There are jerks like that no matter where you go...”
Mr. Cha pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket and offered it to the actor. Lee Wooyeon raised his hand and pushed the manager’s handkerchief away. “…?”
“Please put your handkerchief away. If you bring me a towel, I will us that instead.”
“Sorry. I brought you here to cheer you up.” Wooyeon flashed a polite smile at the apology coming from the CEO. Lee Wooyeon thanked the waiter who brought the towel as well. Looking back, the waiter didn’t close the door right away, so this unfortunate incident happened. He didn’t show any signs of annoyance, let alone anger. The waiter bowed his head repeatedly and apologized
“Though, I guess this means you’re famous now, “Mr. Cha tried to make the situation light. “For even guys like that to recognize you.” When Mr. Cha tried to lighten the mood with a joke, Wooyeon replied with a smile as he roughly wiped the alcohol with the towel. Outside the door, he saw the man passing by who had just argued with him.
“I’m going to go wash my face,” Wooyeon stood up.
“You’re going to leave in that state?
“The bathroom is right there, I’ll be fine.” With that Wooyeon left, leaving CEO Kim and Mr. Cha alone.
“Geez, being that nice... I’m worried that he won’t make it through this world,” Mr. Cha said.
“He may look that way, but he’s got real determination. He’s definitely going to get bigger,” the CEO muttered as he brought his drink to his mouth. In this last drama, he was put in a small role, but the response from the viewers was amazing, so the writer eventually changed the story and he became a major supporting role. He even received more spotlight than the lead and rumors circulated that the lead said he would never work with Lee Wooyeon again.
“Better project will come in, right?”
“We’ve got to make the right choice. If we put him in just anything... It’ll use up his image and have the opposite effect.”
“That’s right. Have a lot of scripts come in?”
“A few, but I’ve gotta look over them.”
“It’d be nice if he shot a good movie too,” it was silent for a moment. “...What’s taking him so long? Don’t tell me somebody’s picking a fight with him again?” A shiver goes down CEO Kim’s back.
“We just barely survived getting a drink thrown at him earlier! If Wooyeon is on his own...!” They both shoot up from their seats. “Got to the bathroom, hurry!”
After running around the floor they were on, they realized Wooyeon was nowhere to be found.
“He’s not in the bathroom!” CEO Kim panted. “Try calling him!”
“He’s not picking up,” Mr. Cha’s face grew paler.
“You don’t think something’s happened to him, do you? Call his manager! Tell them that if they don’t bring that guy from before right now, we’ll report them to the police!”
Their panic was interrupted by a heavy sound coming from behind the door leading to the emergency staircase, followed by another sound. CEO Kim was now in front of the door, hesitating.
“We shouldn't have let him go alone.”
The CEO pushed the heavy iron door back and called out Lee Wooyeon’s name, “hey Wooyeon... are you-”
BAM! STOMP! STOMP! STOMP! STOMP!! Lee Wooyeon was there. But not the Lee Wooyeon they knew.
At his feet, the gangster who poured liquor on him was lying down with white foam on his mouth. Lee Wooyeon, who had been kicking the man who had lost consciousness, looked back without showing any signs of surprise. There was blood all over his smiling face.
“Woo-Wooyeon?” Wooyeon casually turned at the call of his name. His gentle face showing no emotion with a splash of blood on his cheek.
“Why did you come out here? It’s cold.”
“...We got worried when you didn’t come back...” the CEO’s voice trembled.
“Woah... Th-there's... blood on your face...” Mr. Cha, unable to speak properly, points to his face with his finger, and Lee Wooyeon wiped it away with his palm. And then let out a low laugh.
“Oh... this?” Wooyeon flashed a smile that could be hung in a museum and admired by hundreds.
“Don’t worry, it’s not mine.” He kicked the head of the man one more time. At the same time, CEO Kim and Mr. Cha frowned and grimaced unknowingly. Lee Wooyeon continued wiping the blood on his shoes on the man’s clothes. The two were silent.
This was something that was obviously worrying. Looking at the man who was lying down beside Wooyeon, it looked like he needed at least seven weeks to recover from the dislocations he had.
“What the hell is this…” Even after seeing the situation in front of him, CEO Kim could not believe what he was seeing. The two of them didn’t know how to react to the unexpected transformation of the angelic Lee Wooyeon, who never showed any anger, and had a smile on his face no matter what.
“We ran into each other on the way to the bathroom.”
“…”
“Don’t worry. I checked there weren’t any CCTV cameras over here... and I hit him from behind so he won’t know it was me.” Lee Wooyeon pointed at the beer bottle lying on the floor with a friendly glance. He also had leather gloves on his hands. “And there won't be any fingerprints.” The CEO wondered whether this really was a coincidence. CEO Kim and Mr. Cha looked at each other... The actor casually walked towards the pair as if what he did was the most normal thing in the world.
Are you really saying that this person is Lee Wooyeon? Is Lee Wooyeon really spitting out foul words with such a soft tone? It was unbelievable even though he saw it with his own eyes and heard it with his own ears.
“…I really don’t know.” It was a word from CEO Kim with complex meaning.
“Any other questions?” Wooyeon showed no sign of embarrassment or shame despite revealing his ugly side. He took off his blood-soaked leather gloves and handed it to Mr. Cha. “It’ll be risky for me to carry these around.”
“O-okay...” The manager accepted the leather gloves with a shaky face.
“Then I’ll be off.” Lee Wooyeon, who was passing by the two of them, seemed to remember something. He reached out to Mr. Cha and said, “please lend me your handkerchief.”
“…uh.” As if possessed by something, Mr. Cha took out his handkerchief and handed it to him. Wooyeon wiped the blood off his face with the handkerchief and handed it back to the manager.
“Please throw this away too,” he walked through the iron door and disappeared.
The two got to know the real him at that moment. The Lee Wooyeon who politely refused using Mr. Cha’s handkerchief to not dirty it was gone. From that day on, Lee Wooyeon stopped pretending to be nice in front of the two of them.
“Anyways, I’ve prepared a black suit. Mr. Cha will take you, so go to the funeral. Paying your respects will improve your reputation,” CEO Kim explained.
“Is there even space for it to improve?”
“Even if it’s annoying, you’ve got to go. You’ve got our company’s image to think of,” the CEO placed both hands on his hips as he nagged the young man.
“Who said it was annoying? OF course, I’ll go.”
“Ah! And... your new manager that starts tomorrow will take you home so... NO BULLYING!”
“I told you, I don’t bully them,” Wooyeon sighed.
“The press will be there so watch yourself... Don’t do anything stupid.”
“Something stupid?” Lee Wooyeon’s weak spot...
“Women.”
“Oh, women,” Wooyeon grinned. ‘As if... Do I seem like the kind of asshole who would stir up such problems at a funeral? Me?”
The CEO just stayed quiet with his mouth open. “Fine, leave,” CEO Kim waved off the actor.
“Well then,” Wooyeon left the office, leaving the CEO and Mr. Cha by themselves.
“Ugh, what a headache.”
“But... What’s his new manager like, sir?”
“Huh? New manager?” The CEO smiled, “they’re someone who won’t quit, no matter what!”
