Stoke City news and transfer gossip RECAP! Ex-Port Vale boss wades into Jack Butland debate
Ian Holloway’s worrying verdict
Ian Holloway, watching as a pundit for EFL on Quest, said: “It must be really frustrating. You could look at Jonesy’s interview and I feel for him.
“He had a big decision to make. He left a brilliant team that he was building to go to Stoke and there’s something wrong with them.
“It’s too easy. There are too many mistakes, it’s not just the goalkeeper.
“When I look at the first goal, Joe Allen should have won the challenge on the edge of the box. It’s too easy.
“And no one went to the goalie after his mistake. He should save it of course, we all know that.
“For the second goal, there’s no closing down (on Billy Bodin). How come no one is closing him down there? Yes, Jack should have done better but look at them? No one is going to him.
“There is something wrong there. It didn’t happen for Gary Rowett, it hasn’t happened for Jonesy. They seem unhappy. They weren’t even happy with Tony Pulis’s way of playing all those years ago.
“It’s really tough to turn that around… but they are better than that.”
Presenter Colin Murray suggested it reminded him of questions he was asking about Sunderland – and that once you start needing to ask them, it always ends in tears for the manager.
Holloway said: “It always does – because the manager is the one with the contract you can get rid of. You can’t get rid of some of these players who should be rolling their sleeves up.
“How early is it? We’re four games in. But at the end of the day, it’s the modern game.”
Murray added that this form was a continuation of last season.
