Teeth pull at the peeling skin of her bottom lip, wide pale eyes shifting side to side as fingertips drum on the table top. The concern that furrowed Toby’s brow only a partial vision in Claire’s blurred peripheral. Where was this coming from, it was a good question and one Claire had asked herself several times over and over. The shadows, the rot, the insatiable rage that spewed not only into her but others that walked this town -- it had to have a source right? Her fingers continue to drum before a rhythm is formed a song that she could recall her daddy singing back before everything happened, when he seemed normal. “Toby, that’s it.” Hands flatten on top of the table before her gaze snaps to her friend, the familiar curve of her nose and the lashes she envied gazing back at her worried. How insane did she look? Was it like that night with her father, where his green eyes rolled into the back of his head and all that could be seen was white gleamed teeth that bared at her. Goosebumps rose on her arms as the hair on the nape of her neck stood at attention, before her voice dropped to a whisper. “Toby where do shadows go to hide from the sun?”
Sitting up straight she cut her gaze around the diner once more before her mind reeled, the dogs, the cows, the birds -- the very creatures that looked normal but weren’t they all vanished into the woods. Not any woods either, the woods that lead beyond the hills and down the rock side.
“Moles go underground to avoid sunlight, where would shadows go?” Her words are silent as her brows arch high upon her paled face, the silent answer falling between them among the uneaten french fries. The mines.
