I saw “The Sheik” - a 97 year old movie in a 95 year old movie house (The Arcada”) with music on an 85 year old organ. Rudolph Valentino, the great “Latin Lover” of the 1920′s. Being a geek I looked him up.

The thing that popped out at me was this -  Asked if Lady Diana (his love interest) would have fallen for a "savage" in real life, Valentino replied, "People are not savages because they have dark skins.”

Why is is that, already, actors were voicing support for marginalized people? Liberal views?

Could it be because they work so hard to see the world from other points of view?

Liberal Ideas Vs. Mania

My husband, while ruthlessly cuddling our bigger cat: “I’m for unrestricted love to cats! Are you?”

Me: “No, I’m all for restrictions in this case”.

MH: “Huh, and if I’m for ultimate freedom of expression, does it mean, that I’m more liberal and free-thinking than you?”

Me: “No, you’re just maniac”.

And this simple exchange made us think. How often does free-thinking border on mania, and, more importantly, how often can a simple mania in disguise of an ideology, liberal or otherwise, be taken for a solid ground, worth, say, building a policy on?

That said, I do not fancy how my husband uses the word “liberal”. And how it is  used in Russia in general.

We were talking about compassion, and there's something I've noticed.  Although the internet has lead to much more sharing of ideas and issues, often the compassion/empathy of the cause flag-wavers (especially those who are waving the flag on behalf of someone else's cause) is really only a veneer.  It's simply another means to define who is in and who is out.  Consequently, understanding has become instruction (typically along the lines of: thou shalt not...).  

If you think of conservative and liberal as manners of thought, rather than positions on a political spectrum, this starts to make sense.  People who are essentially conservative in their manner of thinking, have latched on to ideas that have come out of liberal thought - and become deeply, angrily, conservative about them...
