Mikhail Skobeleff was born in Saint Petersburg on 29 September 1843 (Michaelmas). His parents were philanthropist Olga Skobeleva, and was Russian general Dmitry Ivanovich Skobelev. He graduated from the General Staff Academy as a staff officer, and was sent to Turkestan in 1868 and, where he remained in Central Asia until 1877.
