First Line Tag

Well, kind of a “first two paragraphs” from my sea monster story, but! And my first attempt at a freestyle poetry story.

She tells people in this sleepy Northeast fishing town that her name is Cas. Just Cas. “Where are you from?” “Down the coast,” is always her response. The weathered sailors of the pub accept it as a satisfying answer. But it’s odd, they think, for a girl of her young age to be sticking around in a town that the younger generation flees from.

One man in particular with a prosthetic from the knee down clears his throat. “I’ve seen you down by the docks. Know anyone on a vessel?” She sips her water then shakes her head. “So, then…?” “I enjoy the ocean,” she says. “It’s like home to me. It’s familiar.” A solemn nod from the man. Most everyone in the pub agrees. A small plate of fish is set before her and the receipt is slipped just behind. She looks at it nervously. The barkeep notices. “Anything wrong?” he asks. “The money,” she admits quietly, “I-I didn’t realize--I don’t have--” The one-legged man holds up a finger. “I’ll cover it.” She turns toward him with a gracious smile. “Thank you.” “Sawyer,” he says. “My name is Sawyer.”
