for the book meme: 1, 3, 14!!
The Girl With All the Gifts, by M.R. Carey
This may be cheating a little bit because I just finished the book so it’s still fresh in my mind, but. Holy shit. I don’t want to give too much away because discovering the world of the book is way too much fun but: This has zombies, Greek myths, complex and wonderful female characters, science, blood and guts and gore, and one of the best endings I’ve ever read, ever. Fun fact: it’s also a bestseller and a staff pick at the bookstore where I work, so. PLEASE READ.
3) the best kissing scene?
Grasshopper Jungle, by Andrew Smith
Natch. Austin kissing his best friend Robbie on a mall rooftop, unsure and confused and noticing that Robbie tastes like cigarettes. This comes pretty early on in the book but it was enough to send me screaming like a wild banshee through the next 200 or so pages, which I finished in under a day. I’m trash but it’s fine
14) the best world-building?
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, by Susanna Clarke
How the hell does anyone do Austen-ion social comedy and epic fantasy so well? How can an author’s world building be so air-tight and delightful? How the hell. What is Susanna Clarke.
