Toshokan sensou (Library war)
Toshokan Sensou (Library War) live action review
I’ve just watched the movie adaptation of a light novel/manga/anime series called Toshokan Sensou or Library War in English. Like the meaning of the title, it is about defending a library using military forces. Yep. Defend the library. For a second it may sound ridiculous, but if you get to know the setting, you’ll see that it is inevitable to use such resort. So, many years ago, Japanese government decided to invoke the Media Improvement Act to restrict pornographic, violent, and discrimatory depictions in books, movies, and such. There were many who oppose this action because it’s a form of restricting one’s freedom to express themselves but they were simply dismissed. One day, a tragedy occured when a library was raided by full-armed guys and many casualties fell. The incident, called Hino Nightmare, became the basis for Library Defense Force formation. This is the story about LDF defending people’ rights and freedom. It won’t be wrong to say this kind of setting matches the description of being a story in dystopian world. I remembered a novel from long ago, titled Fahrenheit 451, which tells basically the same thing like Toshokan Sensou. It is a story where books are burnt because they are thought to bring bad influence. And I found that kind of story is interesting. Utopia is somewhat impossible to happen, buy dystopia is also too extreme to be true. Well, back to the movie, I think this is a good movie. The story and plot are well developed and the characters are also unique. The actor and actresses are some of the top-tiers in Japanese movie industry. Okada Junichi, Eikura Nana, Fukushi Sota, Kuriyama Chiaki, are some of the actors and actresses in this movie. In the movie, they have to do military drills and it looks like the real thing. There are also some close combat scenes and they did it themselves. It was really good. Even Eikura Nana did the rappeling and judo match against Dojo Atsushi (Okada’s role) scenes by herself. She did flying kick and knocked down Okada. It was amazing! As for Fukushi Sota, he fulfilled his duty as the main apple of the eye in this movie (Okada is also cool but Fukushi-kun is the REAL DEAL for me, LOL). This is a good movie with deep meaning and looked-so-real-and-intense battle scenes for actors and actresses whose expertise is not action movies. Thumbs up!
