🪲ID Guess: Lichen Moth - Caterpillar 🌿Date: November 2025
Sorry if this isn't a good photo, I just woke up when I found this little guy inside our bathroom. No idea what it is at all but if it's helpful for IDing, this photo was taken in the Southwest Luzon, Philippines.

Hello, yes this is a lichen moth in the genus Oeonistis, family erebidae. The only one I could find that occurs in the Philippines is Oeonistis altica.

Little White Lichen Moth (Clemensia albata), taken April 9, 2026, in Georgia, US
A small moth resting through the day on the trunk of a tree! I don't see this species too often, but they're easy to recognize when I do. The bright white base with two black spots on the wings and various bands and dots along the edges alongside this moth's posture is pretty unlike most other moths I see. The larvae of this species, like the name would suggest, feed on lichen! They're also a speckled green color, likely intended to blend right in with the very thing they're feeding on. Quite the interesting moth, delivered in a pretty, round package!

Bug of the Day
Looking at it, you would not think that the painted lichen moth (Hypoprepia fucosa) is a mundane creature, but for real, these things are so darned common, I never think to post them. Anyway, enjoy!
