LiDAR Exploration Program
Finished Strange Horticulture in one day - it had it's drawbacks (sometimes I had problems identifying the plants based on book's description, and it was a bit weird starting with zero known plants - given that the mc said that they were interested in exotics plants at some point. also it would be nice to have longer shelfs - even with the looking glass it was hard to find anything), but overall it was fun enough. It had kinda wonky exploration through map - but the story was entertaining and i loved the vibe of the game. The rain, the dark wood desk, the moss-covered glass windows, the music. And the cat is cute.
After that i tried Lidar Exploration Program - a game with really interesting mechanic - at the start everything is dark and you use scanner to highlight colorful dots that form your surroundings. It is basically a walking simulator with incredible concept. But for some reason game tries to be horror. There is nothing that can harm you, and because of the way game works there are limited moving objects - the windmill, the waterfall, wind turbines, things like that. So, besides moving skeleton's head a bit and general darkness of the map, the only thing Lindar Exploration scares you with is sound design. And it's not great. There is one (1) ambient sound (ost?) that sounds like low hollow humming. It is a bit creepy - for first 10 to 15 minutes, after that it becomes jarring. And loops weirdly - when it ends on a quiet part and starts again on noticeably louder one - it's just not great. Also i got stuck all the time - in bushes and grass, the game is very particular with pixels for some reason.
I just don't understand why the game wants to be creepy - when it clearly wasn't designed for it and it does it so poorly. If it was just a walking simulator with calm music instead - i think it would be a more coherent experience. The levels are gorgeous tho - the sunken city is my favorite, loved the crooked buildings. And every level is not only thematically different but also uses different colors for spots - like orange for desert and blue for sunken city - and it is sooo pretty. And the map looks dope.
The final level - the organism one - where you scan a giant heart - is the only one i ran through, the sound of footsteps on something wet and some veiny stuff on walls really disgusted me. Also, the sound of beating heart (it appears when you are near objects you need to scan) is both deafening and gets old fast.
Maybe my biases were working against me - but i didn't enjoy it as much i thought i would. Still incredible visuals - at least it's worth a try.
