10 minute sketch from an online life drawing session
Life Drawing.
I’ve been meaning to take up life-drawing for ages. My illustration work is almost entirely devoid of people and characters, and I need to address that. Life-drawing classes set like a decent way to start. I hadn’t done any life-classes since college twenty five years ago, so I knew it was going to be tough.
I’d forgotten just how much fun, and how invigorating it is to be in a learning environment though, it more than made up for the frustration of how difficult life drawing is! One of the toughest things I had to deal with was working in charcoal, SO different from my usual pen and ink work.

Life Class on the Beach (1910). Sir William Orpen (Irish, 1878-1931). Pencil and watercolour.
The work contrasts apparent indolence with industry. A drama of gazing, glimpsing and day dreaming, it shows a group of students on a summer’s day at Portmarnock outside Dublin, about to start drawing a girl, who is presently in the act of undressing. One attentively observes, one is poised to start, but looks down towards the male student, lazing with his carton discarded, while a final member glances out at the viewer.
Alright, London! The group of drawings from Iggy Pop Life Class by Jeremy Deller—organized by the Brooklyn Museum with Iggy Pop as the model—can be seen in From Life at the Royal Academy of Arts, on view until March 11. The drawings are a central feature of a new exhibition that explores the historic role of life drawing. If you have a friend in London who you think will enjoy these works, share this with them and tell them to check it out!
