- life together
Sheās a 10 but she thinks that cleaning her room is the equivalent of getting her life together.
Grateful to arrive safely in Minneapolis through a snowstorm. Sincere thanks for your prayer and support. Iām not far from where George Floyd and Renee Good were murdered by the police and ICE. Thereās a weighty presence here.
Tomorrow is a full-day meeting with hundreds of faith leaders from around the country. Weāre convening here to protest Trumpās authoritarianism and ICEās terror. This is what our faith demands.
I enter into this time and place in a spirit of listening. My generous host, a dear African American friend who has a resemblance to East Africans, told me he feels afraid to leave his house or to put his hands in his pockets in public places, lest he be attacked and accused by ICE of bringing it on himself. I wish every white American could listen into these intimate, raw, moving conversations. How many of us realize the political terror that is being inflicted by our āauthorities,ā such that simply putting your hands in your pockets (in freezing weather) is felt as a frightening risk? The radical, enduring courage and generosity of African Americans astonishes me.
I sense that the next 36 hours are going to be very significant. Welcome, Holy Spirit. Give us perception.

āListening can be a greater service than speaking. Many people seek a sympathetic ear and do not find it among Christians, because these Christians are talking even when they should be listening. But Christians who can no longer listen to one another will soon no longer be listening to God either; they will always be talking even in the presence of God. The death of the spiritual life starts here, and in the end there is nothing left but empty spiritual chatter and clerical condescension which chokes on pious words. Those who cannot listen long and patiently will always be talking past others, and finally no longer will even notice it. Those who think their time is too precious to spend listening will never really have time for God and others, but only for themselves and for their own words and plans.ā

Today was a pretty busy day. We started the morning doing laundry together, folding everything and changing the bedsheets. I made breakfast for āMr. Anything-is-fine,ā who apparently ādoesnāt eat rice in the morning but will eat sesame noodles, preferably with fish tofu and sausage, and itās even better with a fried egg on top." My husband is the kind of person who says he eats anything, but actually⦠you know how it is. š
After breakfast he ordered groceries from 7 Fresh. The delivery came really fast, which was super convenient. I washed all the vegetables and dried them before putting everything in the fridge. We went to a yoga class around noon and when we got back I stir-fried bean sprouts with golden fried tofu because I know Mr. Anything loves both. I also made sweet stir-fried duck cartilage with toasted peanuts.
Later in the evening, we headed to HotMax to restock the snack shelf and grabbed a jujube cake for a little treat. Naturally, I packed some for him to sneak into work like a tiny edible treasure.
That was another day gone for the two of us.
Its sometime after midnight
dark in the house, clock ticking in the hall
chiming on the hour, softly
ringing tinkly tones into the black
your gentle snores cover the tick tocks
but there's a slight wheeze too
a cold, perhaps? the flu? allergies?
and my tender heart prepares
to pour love into you
before you know you're sick
make sure there's cold medicine
make sure the inhaler is current
ticking off to-dos after midnight
with every tock of the hall clock
so you can rest tomorrow
when you discover what I know tonight
