A tie in the skirt, an helmet on the head, a backpack and the thoughts inside, maybe. By bicycle Toronto is fast, colored, fizzy and crackling. By bicycle, Toronto, summer and life are wonderful.
Because we are in the country where the summer comes in two days, suddenly and that is worth wait and suffer eight long months of winter. Because in two days the coats are taken away and the shorts come and finally the long lines of tree filled that sky that seemed so big. The patios are getting crowded of smiles, colors and overflowing plates and from five p.m. the city turns into a big party.
Toronto is color and heat. Sure, cities where find, live and meet the cultures from all over the world are very easy to find in everywhere. But, place where all of this is blends in a bubble of optimism, lightness, color and bright enthusiasm, maybe not, not in everywhere.
So here that all this is perceptible more than ever when the leafs begin to color, the arms to uncover and the sun to heat up. It seems that with the clothes also a veil of sadness goes away.
The air smells summer even if june has not come yet, the parks are filled and the streets become places where close the eyes, smell the food and dream to be far away around the world.
Toronto is not very big, is not a a big metropolis, but, maybe is in this its force. The immensity, the exaggeration, the american’s ‘everything and now’ meets a nordic, orderly, precise and relaxed mentality.
Color, lightness and smiles. Toronto is unbelievably ‘life&light’. Is Life because it is alive, incredibly alive, in every aspect, in every corner. It is alive in every peeling wall, colored and rendered in a new life, in every little square of green trapped between the shops windows and the cements paths. Is alive in every single smile opened, in every look, in that ‘Hey, How are you?’ which broke that ice’s wall and made everybody so close, friendly and happy.
Is ‘Light’ because is bright. It really is and not because the days are long but because the city transmits light.
It is not vibrant and night owl like New York, nor frenetic like London but bright as, as…. as just the city with the longest winter and the hottest and most vibrant summer can be, incomparable to anything else.
Is ‘light’ also in the days when seems a thick grey blanket glued to the dry branches and to the clouds of electric wires, is ‘light’ also when is the end of April and the thermometer says 0°. Is ‘light’ because the sky is huge and the skyline is low and colored of square home with no roof where all that life is reflects, colored the eyes and the skin.
But then, she comes. Her Majesty ‘The Summer’, finally, because she was made to wait, for so long, too long.
But now is a party, joy and uncontainable light. ‘Life&Light’ in the craziest way. Life in the neighborhoods that are filled and Light of a sun who burns. Every weekends is a wonderful gift. The sundays are wandering lazily around the market stalls of organic muffin and km 0 vegetables, a coffee in a hand and a smoothie in the other one, just to prepare the stomach to the two hours long brunch that see that little table in the patio fills with eggs, bacon, salty muffins and guacamole.
And than, what else if do not take refuge in the first park and engage in on of the things that the Canadian population can do better than drinking beer and enjoying watch a game that seems always the same in which the same hockey teams collide many times each others…. the art of ‘napping’. Yes Sir, the Nap. Actually all this ‘life’ burns a lot of energy and these weekends made by sun, beers, party on the streets, organic markets and thousands calories brunches begin to be difficult. No fear, the city is disseminated by little green and tidy squares, crowded by trees under that take a rest and a break after all this bright energy.
Forget the rhythms, the times, the biological order, first of all the food one. No, from this point of view the americans neighbors have successfully imposed. We are in the place of everything, now, always and a lot. Where eating is almost just a need… for conviviality. The stomach to fill and the soul to cheer. Light in the plates too, always and anyway. Whatever be the choice, wherever in the world would be in the plate is a travel to the ‘Life&light of Toronto.
Then, here is already afternoon and the brunch is already a memory, but Kensigton Market say hello to the spring with a pedestrian day of joy, color and light at the pure state.
Be careful, handle with care and take in small doses. Yes, because the cheerfulness, the heat and the lightness are almost real and almost they fit together between the carts of roasted chicken and caramelized pineapple which make rising high columns of smoke between the colored walls and the tibetan flags waving.
Shows on the roof and banquets on the road, smells that blend in the sun that heats, lights and smiles. She is here, really here. And every second of the next five months is going to be wonderfully crowded of ‘life&light’, lived as if would be the last, as the first after a eight months long winter that freezes everything, hibernating, preserving, that light, that smiles and that warmth.
The city has already woken up, enjoy your ‘life&light’ Toronto’!
