The we that forms this ‘i’ survived myriad psychological environments and passed its information from child to child. Life narrative to life narrative. • I am the culmination of so many mistakes and failures. • An echo of an echo distorted by the lens of negative childhood experiences. Oh, back then I was just...

You know, it’s only with 5, 10, 20, even 50 years of time past events in people’s lives that they are able to describe in pithy quotes or broad strokes what was truly happening to them. It takes distance, subsequent experience, and significant reflection to summarize an era of one’s life into a paragraph of bite-sized motivation, struggle, or triumph.

So many hang on to that idea when they don’t know what the hell is happening, or where they’re going. Our lives are bumbling wanderings full of stubbed toes, bumped heads, and cut fingers that are only much later understood as a path.

If they are understood at all! We love to create narratives about ourselves, and truth is not always the primary goal. We can also gloss over the parts that don’t fit the smooth story. If that’s the case, are our summations of our past selves really ever true?

So will everything make sense in hindsight? Does zooming out give clarity? Or does no one have nearly as much of a clue as they seem?

Whether time will tell or that an overarching plot is a myth, they both lead to being less concerned about how your story is progressing page-by-page and more focused on pursuing what fulfills you, even if that changes when you graduate, change jobs, move, or find or lose people.
