Independence from the sunlight is paramount for a functional society: it’s hard to imagine having to stop all activity with the coming of the dark, waiting for the sun to come up again. Artificial light gives us the freedom to do anything we need whenever (and wherever) we want – an advantage so tremendous and obvious that we readily ignore the downsides. The question is – since we can’t just give up using artificial light – are these downsides even worth considering?
Suffice it to say, artificial lighting significantly affects our health. And yes, despite the lack of alternatives, you can do something about it.
Static vs. dynamic
There’s no going around the fact that artificial lighting is a mere substitute for the sun’s light, and a poor one at that. No matter how good at lighting the environment, artificial lighting is devoid of several key qualities of natural sunlight vital for our daily living activities.
Arguably the most important one is the sunlight’s dynamic nature. From the first sun rays in the morning until the last moments of dusk, the sun’s light is never the same, constantly changing in color temperature and brightness. Our bodies are rigged to synchronize with this daily rhythm, changing the activity of all organs based on the data received from the light. Artificial lighting is much more primitive, usually outputting a fixed, completely static light. Needless to say, the effect it has on our health, as well as our general physical and mental states, is negative.
An upset daylight rhythm, among other things, means an upset endocrine profile. Some hormones, like cortisol and melatonin, may end up not being produced at all, leading to all sorts of adverse effects, with sleepiness and weakness being the tamest.
Natural sunlight without the sun
The best way to keep healthy, then, is to spend more time under the natural, actual sunlight. But how should one go about it in the winter, when you barely see any sun at all, or in an office, away from any windows?
For starters, while it’s far from ideal, even occasional five-minute sunlight breaks will do you good. Then, if at all possible, set up your home or office lighting so that it mimics natural sunlight dynamics as close as possible:
Cold, invigorating light in the morning;
Neutral or cold light (for work environments) throughout the day;
Warm light in the evening;
Probably the most important one: No light at night! It might not be a bad idea to remove all light sources from the bedroom altogether.
Light instead of coffee
It’s a known fact that cold light increases concentration, making us more alert. A properly set-up cold light can get you the same effect as a cup of coffee. Of course, waking up with the sunrise and starting your workday under the morning light, you won’t need either of those.
But what if you need to be alert and concentrated in the evening, when the sun’s warm light has an opposite, relaxing effect, and our circadian rhythm insists it’s almost time to sleep? Can you use a properly set-up light to increase your performance in such situations? The short answer is yes, but only if you know what you’re doing. Simulating different daylight stages out of order can help you squeeze more performance out of your body and mind, but at the cost of severe load and exhaustion later.
