After making it’s debut in Gundam Build Fighter Try, this became my current favorite Back Weapon System designed for the Lightning Gundam. It gives the Lightning Gundam real presence while exponentially increasing it’s speed, mobility, and firepower. I also find the original full burnern concept from Gundam 0083 to be quite innovative and very nifty, so it’s quite awesome to see Yuuma adapt it effectively for the Lightning Gundam. Not to mention it gives the Lightning Gundam the coolest wave rider form out of all 3 of the Back Weapon Systems.

The build itself was simple and didn’t take too much time since it’s an add-on kit. It includes a new barrel attachment for the modular beam rifle that comes with the Lightning Gundam. The system attaches to the back of the Lightning Gundam via a single peg which is enough to keep it in-place. Once attached, the two beam cannons can be attached to the shoulders and also connect into the beam rifle for double the increased firepower output. However, the back system does inhibit movement of the arms, and makes the combined build a a little unyieldy to handle and pose.

With the Back Weapon System Mk-II, The HGBF Lightning Gundam Full Burnern is the largest 1/144 scale gunpla I have now. I’m not sure whether I want to use this back weapon system for the Londo Bell conversion, so I’ll wait till I have all three in order to decide which one would best make for a versatile command unit.

LGZ-92/GHS Uradenko Gundam

There’s a story behind this guy. Last August I went to visit my friends in California, and while we were there we went to a weekend hobby fair-type-thing called Frank and Sons. At the time I had a package on the way here and in it was the Lightning Back Weapon System Mk-III. Now, my Lightning Gundam, seen above, actually has a broken horn that barely stays in place due to friction, so while we were there I wanted to pick up a new one. Now, it was also my birthday, so my friend got it for me as a gift, and, already not liking how the LBWS Mk-III doesn’t color match the Lightning very well, I decided to make a custom out of it. The reason it took me six months to finish is because I ran out of black paint after I finished the first leg, and after I got some more I had other kits piling up, and I told myself I’d get around to him after I had the backlog cleared. Well, I finished my backlog last week, as you may know, so I decided to finally get this guy done with.

I worked on him for 15 hours straight yesterday, and about 5-7 today to get him done. As you can probably tell, I did him mostly in black, with red as an accent color, and gold in a few places like vents, horns, scopes, etc. There’s also a tiny bit of silver on his face and palms. I know the paint job isn’t perfect when you stare at it, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out considering I don’t do full color changes that often. I tried to accent areas of the sculpt that normally go unnoticed on the original Lightning since they’re the same color. It’s easiest to see in the comparison shot by looking at the hip skirt.

Overall, I’m happy to finally have him finished. I think he looks great, for a piece I made at least. He does, however, still smell noxiously of clear coat, and it’s giving me a bit of a headache.

I’m a big fan of the Zeta Gundam and designs that developed from it. So the Lightning Gundam was an immediate favorite among the first custom mobile suits to make an appearance in Gundam Build Fighters Try. It’s slender, sleek form and specialization on precision firepower are just some of the aspects I really came to appreciate about this custom MS. They took the Re-GZ, a Zeta-based design that I felt was kinda underwhelming, and developed it into something much more powerful and intimidating than its base MS. It honestly made me appreciate the Re-GZ design more in retrospect considering that as a rather simple MS design it makes for a good base for custom mobile suit upgrades.

The kit itself is slightly better than your average High Grade kit, excluding the Origin line. There’s a decent amount of surface detail and articulation is average. The shoulder condensers do inhibit some movement. The Lightning Gundam has enough articulation to pull off most of the poses seen in the anime, including a decent kneeling pose. It does lack some color accuracy, but should be relatively easy to fix with paint. The kit comes with a small shield, a modular beam rifle with a short and long barrel attachment, and two beam sabers. The back of the beam rifle can be connected to the shoulder condensers for increased firepower output, and can also be connected to the shield for additional aiming stabilization. 

I’m planning on making a custom Zeta-based design as the lead MS for my own Londo Bell team, and so far this is looking to be the prime candidate for that.

Finished the Lightning Gundam. Even with all the nub cleaning and the separation of the front skirt pieces, it was a relatively fast straight built.

Of course, no even the easiest straight build comes without a hitch. When building the legs, I noticed on the manual that I had missed a heel sticker on the already built feet, which I had to place BEFORE putting the feet together because of how the front of the feet covers the heel.

And I couldn’t pull the feet apart because my nails are too short right now Managed to put the stickers without damaging anything.

I still wonder how the legs would fare on actual Gunpla Battle, seeing that they are kind of hollow.
