Chase the Storm

Among dragonkind, the harnessed power of lightning is a powerful thing. One that many covet, and only a few are brave enough to seek.

A key element in giving life to mechanical automatons, the power of lightning must be collected from the heart of a storm the moment it strikes. Those that dare fly towards the angry dark clouds are thus known as Tempest Chasers.

The object of admiration for their bravery – and, some may argue, for their insanity – those dragons fly amongst the angry skies, seeking out storms and using a mysteryous device akin to a scroll case to hold its harnessed power.

No dragon outside of their guild knows how they do it, and it’s a secret well kept among their trade. Only those with experience might attempt to tame the tempest, and it’s a source of great pride to be acknowledged as a chaser.

also, side note: whenever I refer to the “higher ups” or the “Tempest Spire” I mean those Exalted to the Stormcatcher! It’s the great office in the sky. The vast majority are His army of interns, but some get to be managers tasked with riding herd on all the non-exalted. Out of all the deities, the Boss is certainly the most directly involved in His Flight’s day-to-day life.

Lightning Headcanon time: The methods of constructing the Spires (the small ones found in the Lightning Farm, but also the Tempest Spire as well) are very, very tightly controlled. Only a select few elite, favored of the Boss and the Tempest Spire, know how to manufacture them.

If a clan wants to move into the Lightning Farm and get a Spire of their own, there are all sorts of applications and paperwork and hoops to jump through, and they still have to get a Tempest Spire team to come and install it for them. Very few rules in Lightning are set in stone, but this is one of the few the higher ups insist on. After all, while clans are entitled to most of the power they produce, a certain percentage of it is owed to the Stormcatcher. It wouldn’t do for them to be floating around undocumented.

The biggest aspiration for any fledgling Lightning clan is to get the approval for their own personal Spire, and this is the higher up’s main method of keeping all the little clans under control.
