If I Fall, My Heart Holds On To You (For Lightning--Dreams' contest)
“Babe, you ready to go?” Max asked, his voice echoing through the house. He stood at the bottom of the stairs, adjusting his tie in the mirror. When she didn’t answer, he called out again. He was met with silence so he walked up staircase and into their bedroom. He tapped gently on the door and opened it.
“Kathryn, are you...” He stopped abruptly when he saw her. She was standing in front of her vanity mirror, trying to get the clasp on her diamond necklace to work. The emerald green dress hugged her curves in all the right ways and her hair was up in a bun, soft curls falling across her eyes.
“Here, let me,” he whispered, standing behind her and fitting the clasp together. He placed his hands on her hips and she relaxed against him, turning to kiss his cheek.
“Wow,” was all he could say, his eyes drinking in every inch of her.
“Wow yourself,” she said, turning around and wrapping her arms around his neck. She laughed when she noticed that he was staring at the skin that was exposed by the plunging neckline of her gown. She cleared her throat and he looked up, a blush making its way to his cheeks. He gave an embarrassed grin and pulled her closer, placing a kiss on her forehead.
“Here, let me fix your tie,” she said, pulling it off of his neck. She undid the mess of a knot he had made and wrapped it back around him, placing it under his collar and tying it perfectly. “Nervous?”
“I always am,” he said, his eyes suddenly serious. “I never like these award shows. We never seem to win.”
“You’re always a winner to me,” she said, her hands moving to smooth the fabric of his suit jacket.
“I know, baby. But it would be nice to win for once.” he said. He wouldn’t meet her eyes. She reached her hand up, tilting his chin so he was forced to look at her.
“And you deserve it, you really do. I know it’s frustrating, but the music business is strange. You know that as well as anyone. So I want you to know that, no matter what, I love you more than anything. And the fans will always love and support you. You mean the world to them.”
He finally smiled at her, resting his forehead against hers.
“You’re perfect. I don’t think I tell you that enough,” he said, his eyes sparkling. She bit her lip and raised her eyebrows.
“What are you thinking, Kathryn?” he asked.
“Just remember that, win or lose, you get to come home to this,” she said with a mischievous grin. She pulled away and spun around in front of him, laughing at how his eyes widened when he saw the large slit up the side of her gown.
He spun her around one last time before grabbing her and pulling her into a kiss. As they pulled away, Max reached his hand up to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His fingers grazed the two small hoop earrings that pierced the top of her ear.
“You like them, don’t you?” she asked with a smile. He nodded and kissed her one last time before grabbing her hand.
“You ready?” he asked.
She nodded before taking one last look in the mirror. He stood next to her and wrapped his arm around her waist, his hand resting on her hip.
“Damn, we look good,” he said and she laughed as he pulled her out the door.
