The Champion
For Susan
She stood up after tying her shoes. She couldn’t believe this was happening again, but she was ready. The training would pay off.
Susan ducked into the hallway, making her way quickly to the back office. The door was locked. She took a bobby pin out of her hair and popped the lock before anyone noticed. The door closed softly behind her.
Looking around, everything was exactly as it was in the photos. The desk drawer wasn’t locked, and what Susan needed was inside. She grabbed it and left the building without being noticed.
“These shoes really ARE better in pink,” she thought to herself.
When she got home, she unloaded the groceries as a diversion. Robby never knew she wasn’t at the store.
“I really like that salsa, hon. Did you get extra hot? And pico?” Her husband loved Fajita Fridays.
“Of course! Let’s load up the car and get to Austin! The girls are ready. I just have to run a quick errand before we go. I’ll be right back.”
Susan hopped back into the car and texted a quick message before leaving the driveway. “This is huge,” she thought.
The bar was downtown, but easy to get to quickly. She parked in the alley and switched on the flashers. The kitchen door was ajar, and she went in.
The man was in a dark coat and hat, waiting. Susan handed him the envelope and without a word, turned and left.
“Hey!” the man called after her. “Are you sure?”
“It’s time for them to go.” Susan was home in five minutes.
The next afternoon, bellies were full of fajitas and the family was enjoying a weekend together without a football game. Jenny was on the computer.
“Did you guys see this? Evidence has come forward to not only deem those restrictive rules on women’s health unconstitutional, but that the laws were passed to make more money for the Committee. The entire Committee has resigned!”
“Serves them right,” Robbie said, biting into another fajita. “I wonder where the evidence came from?”
Susan smiled to herself and looked down at her pink shoes. “Who knows? At least they’re gone!”
The family opened a bottle of wine to celebrate, as optimistic conversations filled the rest of the evening.
It's 5 days until our Lights of Love ceremony! Dedicate a light on our Tree of Remembrance: www.sobellhospicecharity.org.uk/node/828
