Me setting up my new phone completely from new, especially regarding the theme/launcher: minimalist... Minimalist... So full of ads I'm not touching it... Can't actually change the theme at all... Minimalist with a paywall... Free but full of trackers and ineffective... Somehow minimalist WITH ads and requires a subscription to use dark mode...

What the hell happened to open source, customization, and being secure?

Rant below brought to you by the frustration of only getting to choose one out of those three things more often than not.

Apparently I have been transferring my apps and phone themes from device to device so long that I've outlived a lot of the things I've used or they have since become proprietary and/or scammy in the updated versions. Everything now is nearly identical, bland, bare-bones, and only gives pastel options on dark mode. I hate it.

I want intense purple and real deep black and rich teal and shocking lime green. I want fonts I find interesting and like my own messy handwriting. I want my icons to either be all the same shade of intense purple and adorable cartoon style OR multicolored neon colors that actually glow. Either way, I want them star shaped and not the boring square/circle mix. I want to actually decide and control what has what permissions or access to my info. I also want my damn apps to actually load like they should and be able to function without having to tell google literally everything I touch.

I want to have my phone be MINE. Not just a tool to gather analytics on me for companies at best while being so bland I want to scream. I want it to do what I need it to do with the programs I choose for it to use, look how I want it to look while it does, and not sell any crumb of information about me it can the very second it can. That's why I started using android in the first place in 2010. Somewhere along the way, the attitude changed. Its no longer about it being your device and your choice. Now it is control and making everything look the same across everything so you connect it to everything.

I swear I'm not actually a hater of technology, I'm just really frustrated. Having been through the rise of internet without a lot of restrictions and the rise of smartphone, I hate seeing it turn to this. It is more censorship and ai, less customization and privacy. Less thinking and more lack of control. Which is honestly just a horrible combination, especially for someone who grew up never fitting in to a controlling and conformist environment.
