One of the things I love about kdramas is that it really subverts what masculinity is supposed to be. You see the loser who's down bad for the female lead (Lovely runner, queen of tears, Love Next Door, Strong Girl Do Bong Soon, the Judge from Hell), you see the soft masculinity in hometown cha cha cha, summer strike and Doctor Slump and extraordinary attorney woo, the protective kind of masculinity in any of Ji Chang Wook's and Ahn Bo Hyun's works, the reassured and confident masculinity of Seo Kang Joon in Undercover High school and Lee Jun Hyuk in Love scout, the playful masculinity in Twinkling Watermelon and Crash Course in Romance, the stoic but gentle masculinity in Doctor Romantic and Hierarchy, and the "I care about you and only you" kind of masculinity in Vincenzo to name a few.
This is progress from the old kdramas and I get that it's fictional and in real life, some of these actors are assholes. But in the era where Toxic masculinity is rampant, I think we can turn towards kdrama to have some inkling of what kind of man we should strive to be and what kind of man we should want. This should not something we see only in fiction. We should raise our sons (I'm 21) to be like this so that one day it's not just a concept for fictional love stories.

day 0
"there a strict check-in time so make sure that you'll reach the bus on time" noh sanghyun, the student president of the interior design department, had been droning on about tomorrow's trip for 30minutes now. the interior design department of your university, much like other departments, had a annual tradition of going on field trips during winter, especially after mid terms. which meant that all 4 years, right from the first years to the graduating batch , would go to the countryside and bond together.
the president had a long list of rules and instructions he had to go through. you were resting your head on your best friend, jieun, who had been playing a game for the past half n hour. you had no idea what new rule your senior was talking about. you were exhausted after submitting your last assignment last night and just wanted to go home and rest. just five minutes after the door to the mini hall opened and someone came and sat next to you, panting in exhaustion from running.
you turned to see wooseok, red, hair messy and very out of breath. he looked straight at sanghyun and mouthed a "i'm sorry". wooseok was the vice president of the department, so technically he should've been here from the start. excluding that he was also part of the university's swimming team, a model for the fashion club, a member of the drama club and one of the most famous campus crushes. he was an all-rounder through and through. the professors loved him and that's exactly what you hated. you didn't mind his popularity or his many positions. however, you drew the line on winning the favor of the professors.
wooseok, a previous architecture student, had shifted departments right in the middle of second year. he had somehow captured the hearts of everyone. the professors who once had complimented your work ethic and let you off once in a while, were now starting to scold you. you had just as much work as him. you were part of the eco club, craft club, the vice-president of the events club and you were a proxy vice president of the interior design club too. why? because wooseok was too busy for things and you were the next running candidate. so apparently making a list of people attending and adding them to a excel file was too much work for poor wooseok. him and his stupid pretty privilege.
yes it was childish to dislike someone only for this but you had more reasons. for example, his personality. "what did he say till now?" wooseok asked after he could finally breathe. he had a stupid smile on his face. "i tried really hard to run here from the fashion club but i missed it" he said, looking all guilty. literally no one asked...you thought. "he didn't reveal the suprise yet? i hope not. i really wanted to be there for that" he continued with a stupid smile. doesn't he smile too much? why does he smile so much at everyone?.....you thought. "did he reveal it or did he not?" he asked you, waiting for a reply. "he didn't, cause we aren't doing it" you replied. the surprise? a early farewell for the seniors. an entire night of partying, performances and food prepared by the juniors but no one seemed to want to participate out of exhaustion. so the plan was scraped after sanghyun and you talked it over.
"but it was going to be so fun" he said his eyes turning to a sad puppy. "they juniors don't want to do it. what can we do?" you asked him. "you're part of the event club can't you organize it?" he asked. "you're the vice president of this department can't you convince them?" you questioned back sarcastically. "fine, i'll convince them so let's do it. i'm going to tell hyung" he said, getting up. "wait what-" he had already walked to sanghyun. great. of course he was going to get the credit for it, while you were the one who did the actual work.
"stop shaking your leg" jieun said placing her hand on your knee. you hadn't even realize you were doing that. "you always do that when he's around" she commented. "it's the anger he rises in me" you said. "yeah sure, the anger" she said with a small smirk."what do you mean? it is!" you said. "you look at him as if you're in love with him, maybe that's why you're red" she said teasing you. "no i don't!!"you disagreed, messing with her game to annoy her back.
you had this conversation with jieun about 50 times now. why? because she knew you in and out. you found wooseok incredibly attractive. you hated it but he was so so handsome. you just couldn't let your attraction win over your ego. so you buried deep in you but it always crawled to the surface in some way when he was around you. sometimes in the way you looked at him in admiration as he walked the runway during a fashion show or the deep concentration you showed when he was on stage during a play or when he made an appearance at an event and all eyes were on him but he shy-ed away to meet his friend group. you had a crush on someone you couldn't tolerate. your university was surely really interesting.
day 1
you woke up at 5:30 that morning, the bus was leaving at 9. so why were you up so early? at ass crack of dawn you got a call. "hello" you picked it up before seeing who called. "did i wake you up? i'm sorry. we have a problem" wooseok's worried voice said from the other side. it was almost comical how fast your face contorted in anger. "what problem could be such a big deal that you're calling me at-"you checked the time "freaking 5 in the morning?". "the list you made, it's short of 10 people. i just checked the list and someone updated it with 10 names the morning after we closed the registration" he explained. "what?!"you said sitting up. you placed him on speaker and then went to check the shared list that had been sent to the department. "i told those idiots not to update anything after registration closed. what the hell will we do we don't have place for 10 more people" you said annoyed. "we can figure it out. i tried calling hyung but i think he's sleeping" he said with his stupid positive attitude. "wooseok we have less than 4 hours before we leave. figure out what?" you said annoyed. "maybe some people can volunteer to drive to the venue?". "who will do that? and who has a car?" you said before realizing that sanghyun does have a car. "wait i'll call you back" you said, hanging up the call.
you selected sanghyun's number and prayed that he would pick up. he picked up on the second ring. "hello?" he said, suprisingly sounding very awake. "sunbae we have a problem" you said and then explained the situation to him. "i don't mind it, we could take my car. it's a seven seater excluding me, jieun and you could come with me. i'll ask some of the other seniors too" he said and you agreed. "oh but i dont have space for everyone's luggage. 7 bags plus the equipment and food, i'm carrying wouldn't fit" he said. "well, i guess we could fit in the bus". so it was decided.
it was 8am and half of the people were gathered. wooseok had also managed to convince sanghyun to let him in the car. he stuffed his luggage in the bus next to jieun's and your's. realizing it would be a long ride, you went back and reached for the pillow you carried. atleast that's what you thought.
you managed to find yourself in the middle seat at the right back with jieun and freaking slenderman. "this is so uncomfortable" wooseok complained as he shifted his legs again. wooseok was really tall and the leg space at the end was horrible but none of the seniors wanted to sit at the back. the three of you were cramped together. jieun wasn't bothered at all. she spoke to you and then fell asleep to music. leaving wooseok and you together. correction: leaving a whiny wooseok and you together.
"why didn't you just get your own car? don't you have a driver?" you asked. "my driver isn't going to drive all the way to the countryside and i was scared my car would get damaged. sasha is precious to me" he said pouting. he has named his car sasha....wow.
"whatever i'm going to sleep" you said putting your head back on your pillow you placed there. "oh, that's my pillow" he said pointing at the pillow. "what are you talking about it's mine" you said folding your hands. "no it's mine" he said searching for the label. "oh god" you shouted in annoyance grabbing the pillow nd hugging it. "you're not the only one with a white pillow" you said. "but that is mine"he protested. "what's going on?" sanghyun asked from the drivers seat, looking at the two of you from the rear-view mirror. "sunbae he keeps annoying me. push him out" you complained like a toddler. "wooseok don't annoy her"sanghyun said a small smile at your childish behaviour. "hyung that's my pillow. i'm a hundred percent sure of it" he protested again. "I don't care if it's your pillow, stop fighting" sanghyun lightly scolded back.
midway, you'll stopped at a rest stop. wooseok got out of the car and groaned in pain. streching his legs. you needed to pee so you didn't look back and ran to the restroom. you came out and saw jieun standing with wooseok, who was still stretching his leg. you weren't completely heartless and you heard him groan even half asleep during the ride. sanghyun and his friends who were standing away from the two next to the restraunt were giggling, when you approached them.
"sunbae i need to speak with you"you said and you'll went aside. "well wooseok is having a hard time at the back and if he could shift to the front that would be better. i think he already hurt his knees" you said. sanghyun's expression which usually had been soft when speaking to you turned into something different. "so that's what was wrong with him. he looked so funny standing like that exercising" he said laughing a little. you didn't understand what was so funny about the situation. "so can he switch?" you asked not interested in what he had to say. " yn the reason we are all doing this is because he didn't do his job. he was incharge of the list whether you made it or not. so let him be. he won't die with knee pain" sanghyun said. the same caring sanghyun who had helped you take care of the abandoned kitten in campus had now turned mean. "yeah fine" you said not knowing how to reply. you walked away but heard him talking about wooseok's pain and then snickering with his friends. why were the seniors acting like high schoolers?
after buying food for the three of you, you found a convivence store and got some pain relief spray. "take this" you said to wooseok as you sat down to finally eat some breakfast. jiwun and him had already started before you. "what? where did you get this" he asked smilling, his mouth still full from his last bite. "just go and put it on you idiot" you said and he happily obeyed.
ökay something happened" you said to jieun as soon as he was out of sight. "sanghyun is being really weird. i thought he liked wooseok but he didn't agree to letting him shift when i asked. then he was laughing about it with the seniors. isn't hat weird?" you asked. jieun thought about it for a moment. "i think i have seen him roll his eyes at wooseok before. even today when you were packing away the luggage at the bus and wooseok was taking a headcount. he was talking about how wooseok was so incomptent and called him during his morning workout so he didn't pick up" she said. "but he picked up my call really fast?" you said. "do you think he doesn't like him? yeah he messes up but it's not like he doesn't do anything" you said. you didn't know what to think. sanghyun is a senior you knew from the start of university. he's never acted like this but his behavior toward wooseok was icking you out.
after a very long and tiring ride you'll arrived at your destination, a camp-site with multiple cabins and rooms, assigned to girls and boys each. after the headcount, that you'll did 3 times because of sanghyun. you'll allocated rooms to everyone according to their years.
"give it to me" wooseok said, grabbing your luggage right from your hands and walking ahead to the cabin for third years. "what about your knees"you shouted but he was always way ahead talking to some classmates. jieun and you decided to change into the outfits you'll packed and get ready together. which took about 1 hour. you stepped out before jieun who was still curling her hair. sanghyun had also called you cause he had something to dicuss but as soon as you stepped out of your room you someone call out to you. "yn!" wooseok yelled running to you, his bangs flying up.
"yes what" you said as he stopped next to you. were his knees even hurt? "my pillow, it's not where my luggage was. so i'm sure the one you were using is mine" he said. "not this again" you said walking. "i bought my pillow. it's white and square and a pillow. if you lost yours, it's not my fault" you said as you'll walked side by side. "but it's really mine. what if you took mine?" he argued back. "so im a thief?" you asked. "well if the shoe fits" he said and you side-eyed him.
"what's happening with the event?" sanghyun asked, as you'll sat in the main room. "i'm going to convince the juniors to do it. i even got some of our-". "wooseok if you can't handle it just don't do it. how are you going to convince the 1st and 2nd years?" sanghyun interrupted. "i already convinced some of our classmates like i was saying" wooseok said with a hint of annoyance to his voice. "then the two of you decide and tell me. we have only 3 days and the farewell event needs to happen day after tomorrow" he said checking his phone. "i need to go handle something. i'll see you at lunch" sanghyun said looking at only you. you looked at wooseok for his reaction but he didn't seem that bothered. "convince a few people and then gather them after dinner in my cabin. i'll talk to the girls in mine"you instructed wooseok, who was busy doing something on his phone. "wooseok"you called when he didn't reply. "look at this" he said showing his phone to you. on it was a picture of him at a sleepover with some friends, cuddling a pillow while sleeping, while also smiling widely. "what am i looking at?"you asked confused. "that pillow. see it's mine" he said pointing. you groaned in frustration walking away from him.
the rest of the day went by fast. jieun and you got time to take pictures and take a nap. it was 7pm and everyone was gathered at main room, to drink and have fun. the seniors were busy singing karaoke. jieun and you were in a corner gossiping with a few friends with drinks of your own. "yn are you and wooseok a thing?" a classmate asked. "uh no"you said confused on what would make her think that. "he's always following you around like a puppy. he event sat by you yesterday in the hall" she replied. "don't even bother with her. she's in denial" jieun said taking a sip of her drink. "yeah well if you don't want him there's a lot who do" your classmate said looking at wooseok. you turned your attention to him. he was sitting witha group of his friends and one girl who may have been a second year student. she was sleeping his arm and laughing at something he said. you turned back to your friends. "let them have him then" you said gulping down your entire drink.
you went out for some fresh air sometime after the incident. then sanghyun found you. "what are you doing out here?" he asked a cigarette in his mouth. "you're smoking?" you asked confused. he had never smoked before. "i just picked it up recently" he said taking a puff. "actually, i've been doing it since highschool" he corrected himself. "i just lie sometimes so you won't think i'm a bad person" he said laughing to himself. you didn't have anything to say to him. his lies were making you doubt if you ever knew him. "i don't think there's any reason for you to lie to me" you said looking at him displeased. his smile faltered, "i wouldn't want you to think-". "i don't think anything about you. you're my senior" you said. his face dropped, "right" he said, throwing his cigrette on the ground and stomping on it. he went away without saying a word. sanghyun is someone you knew since you came to university. you trusted him and thought of him as a friend. however, your entire perception of him had changed in just a day.
you were walking back to the room when wooseok walked out. öh yn"he said happily. "were you going in? i actually was coming to search for you" he said. "why?"you asked your mood off. "about the farewell"he said. "what's up? did something happen?" he asked noticing your expression. "it's nothing" you said sighing and walking back out so he could tell you about the event. "well I convinced about 15 people. they'll meet us here by 12" he said looking at the sky and then at you. you nodded. there was a minute of silence and you staring into the distance, thinking about everything that happened.
"sanghyun said something to you?" wooseok asked breaking the silence. you looked at him and he was looking back at you. he had a serious expression on his face, something he rarely did around you. "he has been lying to me" you said, the alcohol making you want to tell him everything you were thinking about. well not everything. "lying?"he asked rasing an eyebrow. "he smokes, since 3 years apparently" you said. wooseok nodded. "and you dont like that he does? you don't like men who smoke?" wooseok asked. "no what?" you asked back. "then why would you be dissapointed about him smoking? aren't you two a thing?" he asked. "what are you talking about?" you asked disgusted. sanghyun had been a senior you looked upto for so long, you never wanted a relationship with him. "are you not?"wooseok asked smiling and then quickly changing it to a more neutral expression. "no we have never been a thing. i don't care if he smokes. it's just weird because he has been lying to me about it because he wants to me to think good of him" you said. "oh!" wooseok said in relief. ÿeah i think he just likes you" he said while you looked at him suprised. "you didn't know?" he asked you. "the first time, i saw the two of you in one room. sanghyun's friends were all talking about the two of you. saying thing like how you'll look good together" he said looking at the sky. "i never saw you'll going on dates or hangout like a couple. so i assumed that it was a sitautionship or something like that" he continued. "but i'm a bit glad you aren't with him. he's really rude sometimes" he said. "so you this whole time thought we were a thing?" you asked and he nodded. "that was so much information for just 5 minutes. "i didn't even know he liked me" you said. "i just think of him as a senior" you continued.
after about twenty minutes of trying to process everything. you'll ate dinner. everyone involved in the farewell gathered at midnight. you with the help of jieun organized the performances and games. by the end of the meeting, you were exhausted. everyone had already left to go to bed. "i don't know how i'm going to sleep tonight" wooseok whined as you'll walked out of the main room. "yn i'm going to washroom, i cant deal with his drama" jieun said and left before you could protest.
"i really need my pillow to sleep" wooseok whined again. "you can't be serious. you're talking about the pillow again?" you asked in disbelief. "because it's important. i need to hug something to sleep and that pillow is important to me" he argued back. "just hug your friend or something. or your girlfriend" you said. you let the last one slip out of jealousy. "what girlfriend?"he asked confused. "the girl who was sitting with you at dinner". "that's a junior she likes me but i turned her down" he explained and you nodded. you felt a wave of relief wash over you.
"why did you think she was my girlfriend?"he asked leaning to look at your face as you'll walked. he had his hands behind his back and a silly smile on his face. "because you rarely speak to girls outside of work and you two seemed close" you answered. "i do speak too girls. i speak to you" he said stopping. "that's not the same" you replied stopping too. "why does it not? i hang out with you and talk to you" he said. "by talk i meant like a talking stage. like talking to girls you're interested in" you explained. "yeah and" he asked smiling at you. he smirked to himself and approached you. placing his hand on your head. "goodnight yn" he said and walked away. he just walked away like that? with no explanation. what did he even mean by that? he's interested in you? why would he be interested in you? what the hell was going on today?
The problem in both Idol I and Lovely Runner is how to make a romance between a superfan and the object of her fandom not feel incredibly uncomfortable and both shows do it very well. Even without the pre-fame meetings and rescues, the shows clearly establish the motivations of the female leads as initial platonic and righteous. Im Sol doesn't want to save Sun-jae because she wants to date him, she just wants him to be alive. She doesn't consider him as a romantic prospect at all until she learns that he had a crush on her as a teenager. Similarly, while Se-na took on Ra-ik's case because of her love of him as an idol, she stayed with him due to her own lifelong pursuit of justice for the wrongly accused. We are shown that she finds being close to him somewhat painful, in a "never meet your heroes" kind of way. And, just like Im Sol, Se-na does not consider him as a romantic prospect but as a client (she is the one more stringent in maintaining that barrier). While Idol I is more serious and exploring more of the problems with fandom and the industry, I think they do both emphasize that it's okay to be a fan and find happiness in admiring celebrities/fandom, but that there is a healthy line that unfortunately can be crossed.
I'm excited to see more from Idol I about how how the industry itself almost encourages people to cross that line. The idea of idols as perfect packages that must never be opened.
Your first love?
