"villains can't just be villains anymore" as if there's an actual crisis in writing that is threatened by misunderstood or sympathetic villains
.
saw a Poast a few days ago which was BIZARRE to me and has been bothering me ever since which presented an endgame empathy check (the 'nobody in martinaise was afraid of you' one that can trigger during the debrief) as a heartwarming moment... as in 'see? this is proof that nobody was scared of harry really :) a win for mental illness rep' and it's like. Listen Man i don't wanna put op on blast but people very much were afraid of harry!!! the women in martinaise, specifically, were afraid of harry!!! because he was an unstable misogynist cop with a gun!!! klaasje, ruby, sylvie, acele, cunoesse (who was visibly terrified of him and who he can literally choose to shoot & kill). the point of that empathy check isn't 'NEWSFLASH! harry is a good guy at heart :)' and it feels so reductive to reduce it to that lmfao The Point Is that harry is a cop in denial of his copness. he's in a position of power over everyone he speaks to. he knows, on some level, that he frightened people during the investigation! he's lying to himself about it because if he acknowledges the truth directly his head will explode ('i don't want to be this kind of animal anymore'). he's not inherently evil or irredeemably abusive, he contains depths & multitudes & the capacity for change... and he's also a misogynist cop with a gun. because nobody exists in a vacuum and everything is connected by a web of history and context and politics. which is sort of the point of the game
weird choice to have them face kaido so early in the arc but at this point who cares about anything i guess
im sure there were connections made with the original game but the life is strange prequel just really drives home the whole rachel amber/ laura palmer parallels theyre not even being subtle about it at this point like the band you go see at the beginning of the game??? Firewalk??? looks like we got some twin peaks fans here bois...
