a form of self care: imagining daniel faraday doing Autistic Things
30 days of Autism Acceptance Day 1 (A Bit Late)
My name is Sarah. (I’m not going to post my last name because I like to keep my tumblr private). I am 22. I am self dx (though I have had a therapist confirm that I could be autistic. I haven’t gotten a formal diagnosis). I actually figured out that I might be Autistic last summer, My then girlfriend (it ended badly with her but that’s something for another time) was on the spectrum and I realized that I could really relate to a lot of her experiences with autism and one day I decided to go through the diagnostic criteria and I realized that I fit it. As I continued to do research and read a lot about the experiences of autistic people as well I realized that autism could explain a lot, (a lot) of my experiences especially my childhood experiences. I had always known that I was different, Suddenly with this realization, all these disparate memories made sense, I had always known that I was different, I was bullied a lot as a kid and my childhood involved a lot of concerned teachers wanting my mom to fix me some how. I remembered a lot of things.my mom trying to get me to look people in the eye when we were out in public, me having a fit for an entire day when I was 10 because my mom was trying to get me to wear a bra (sensory hell. I did my bra wearing time for 10 years and when I went to college I decided no more, my boobs aren’t that big. They can be free), the fact that I wouldn’t wear jeans until I was 10 because they were also sensory hell (despite being seen as super weird for it) and that one stretch in 6th grade where I went fuck it and just wore bought one shirt in 7 different colors and that was it, spinning in my room for hours, Having people explain to me how to respond to phrases like have a nice day and what’s up, rocking back and forth on my bed (unfortunately destroying a few mattresses slowly in the process sorry). It all was connected, all these things that I had just dismissed as me being weird or maybe there being something wrong with me. There was a reason for it. Autism also explains a lot about the current me, how I wear headphones all the time , how whenever I have to transition (like before I go on a trip or before breaks or before heading back to school or starting a new job) my anxiety goes through the roof, why I still stim by rocking (and many other things), how socializing can be exhausting for me, why I still don’t make eye contact a lot of the time, why I get bothered by the sound of a tv upstairs when no one else thinks its a big deal but still have to fake my way through most conversations with people I dont know (auditory processing disorder), maybe why I have anxiety (because I definitely have anxiety but I think alot of what I was interpreting as anxiety could be sensory overload), why I’ve found it hard to form relationships with people.
If there is a sudden weird change in my personality now its because I'm trying to stop masking my neurodivergent traits so when it'll be easier when I can see a doctor to find out why my brain is built different Its been very hard because of trauma(if I displayed any of these behaviors in the past i'd be beat or screamed at), and I tend to annoy people when talking about my special interest or this weeks hyperfixation, and I cant handle rejection that well... but I'm hoping this might make it easier for screening, so maybe it'll be worth it
You ever forget you're autistic and need to do autistic things to survive?
I had so much silly putty as a child and i just now got some as a party favor and its so great buy me more
