One cool thing I discussed with @danceblades @etwahlian and @feathercall recently is the existence of magical storms in Ionia and magical precipitation in general, where the rain is infused with magic.
These probably don’t happen all the time. Magic works like the water cycle where it’s in the ground and is sometimes absorbed into the atmosphere, and then falls back down to the earth when the conditions are right. But when they do, there’s a distinct different feeling to it. I imagine the sky changes to a more purplish-blue tint or something when these happen. The more extreme the rain the more drastic the change.
Storms can affect mages’ powers. Naturally, those who control water will find their powers increased. Those who control fire might have their powers weakened a little, but probably not by much. I imagine that mages try to practice their powers during storms when they can so that they can attune more to that magical aura in the air. Basically, more exposure to magic means being able to better control and harness one’s power.
Then there are some extreme cases. Let’s say there’s a powerful magic storm. The raw magic infused into the rain is so concentrated that it can be more destructive than a regular hurricane. But it also allows for greater potential to be unlocked in mages. There are stories of mages who have walked out into these thunderstorms and developed incredible powers. But at the same time it’s also likely that mages could be severely injured or hurt during these times.
In the end storms are pretty impactful to the magical climate of Ionia and they definitely shape the way mages go about their practice.
