@likeclockwcrk asked: if the powers that be allowed it, i would tell you what destiny awaits this land. the golden wolf sighed, low and melancholy, as he rested his exhausted head upon the lap of the imprisoned princess. you must not dwell on that which you cannot control, descendent of light.
"you ask too much of me," her answer came gently, the barest hint of a laugh in her voice and a soft smile hidden behind her cloak. a gloved hand smoothed the fur along the wolf's head, soft and reverent. "i know that i cannot control the outcome, and that it is out of my hands, and yet..."
her head tilted, gaze shifting from the golden beast to the window. she had taken to looking out over her kingdom since her imprisonment, mourning for her people and her land, but as of late...it held less grief. there was a small glimmer of hope, and her eyes wandered the horizon as though she might see a change, might see the sun, for the first time in ages. "i cannot help myself but to wonder how those two are faring. if they are making progress...if they are doing well." could she forgive herself if the two found themselves hurt, or starving, or cold in their journey? "...and i cannot help but wonder if, perhaps, i should have tried to stop them from going."
the imp wouldn't have listened, of course, and to do so would have crushed the only small bit of hope she'd felt. but it was not their burden to carry, it was hers. it should have been hers.
she closed her eyes, her hand drawing still for just a moment as her body tensed, before returning her gaze to the wolf.
“or...should i have gone in their stead?” she had thought of it often; it was her duty to save her kingdom, but she worried.
the door to her prison had no lock, and yet a guard came by to check on her throughout the day. she could leave any time she wished, and yet what would the consequences be? would it be taken out on her people?
she sighed.
"i have been so paralyzed by my own grief and guilt...that poor youth should not be putting himself at risk, it is not his responsibility..."
