Duuuude! I’ve been thinking of making a redbubble shop. Is it worth it? Do you make good monies??
well its like!! mm its kinda a love hate thing i got going w/ redbubble, lemme sum up
ive never advertised my rb so any sales ive made are from people just stumbling across my work through the tagging system n i only have three pieces in my shop so i dont make a lOT of sales, but i clear about $30 ever other month or so which is a nice plus (you only get paid after you’ve garnered a profit of $20, n the deposits are issues @ the beginning of every month) so thats nice! i’m sure id be able to hit the $20 paywall a month if i bothered to update my shop more often and advertise but i have not done that despite the fact that its definitely doable
but the manufacturer fees vs profit are a really steep ratio, you have to chalk the prices waaaaaay up if you wanna clear more than a couple cents to a couple dollars on any given product, and that makes your work inaccessible to those that dont have like 25$ to shell out on a mug. but if you keep it at their base ratio (20% markup from manufactor price) you’re not really making anything. which is pretty frustrating when you spend hours and hours on a piece and youre basically making nothing bc they start you out w/ high prices and an 80-20 split. its a business from their standpoint this is a good strategy, like hey ive known people who work in/run print shops basically my whole life, this is how you do it, but as an artist who wants their work to be accessible to a wide variety of people and still get that $20 minimal paycheck @ the end of the month, it can be pretty frustrating. esp since you dont get any proofs so you dont even know if the products theyre putting out w/ youre work on it are any good or have any lasting value. and then of course, there’s the sales they run which is fine i get that every place has sales from time to time, but its also frustrating to sell like 3 stickers which would normally net you (or @ least me) $1.20 total, for $0.27 total. its smart shopping n i dont begrudge the costumer, it just rubs me that i dont get a say in when/whether or not it happens
(also im not sure how their policies work sometimes?? one of my pieces got taken down for copyright infringement once despite it being my own art/design. i figured it was just cause it was fanart, maybe the character’s copyright holder didnt want art of it being sold, but there are literal like, listings on the site using actual art and the actual logo and stuff, blatantly stolen, that havent gotten taken down, so i have no idea how they determine what is and isnt infringement, so be wary on that i suppose)
but! that doesnt change the fact that profits from my rb have baled me out of some tight scrapes a couple times or that im going to stop using them, theres just some aspects about the whole thing im not Keen on. i think society6′s manufacture prices might be a bit cheaper?? idr, i was looking @ them at one time but ultimately chose redbubble bc it had the higher product variety @ the time. s6 has got some nice things now too tho. id say definitely do ur research before committing 2 something!!
