Lilith as the sacred fire
for some reason this week, I’ve been seeing plenty of Lilith appropriation for some odd time—arguing with it a lot. My biggest question for anyone wanting to defend Lilith being open is this:
Why do you want to argue that she’s open?
I have never ever seen one good reason to it. Judaism has faced several genocides, expulsions, and unmeasurable suffering. Even if she was open, why cling to being from a people that have suffered so much? That fought so hard to keep themselves alive and going, to keep their sacred scrolls intact? You cannot prove spirituality exists, but what you know is that people exist. And Jewish people deserve to have their identity respected.
Especially when there are open beings like Babalon, Aphrodite, Bellona, Kotys, etc that all can embody dark femininity. Especially Bellona if you’re going for a violent femininity angle. Just. Why?
This is a question I want to ask because I don't think anyone has asked it yet. I realized while I was watching Supernatural again, that sereval series that have angels and demons in the recent years have Lilith and Metatron in them. Like, Supernatural itself has Lilith and later Metatron, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has both, Shadowhunters and Lucifer have Lilith while Good Omens and His Dark Materials have Matatron. And like, did any of them did a good job, or at least a mediocre job, at representing this figures of Judaism? Or it was just bad and uncomfortable, even if was not necessarily harmful?

Tiamat
I wish more people knew about Tiamat as an alternative to Lilith, but sadly people will continue appropriating and violating parts of a culture that's not theirs through non-jewish worship of Lilith. It saddens me.
Have you heard anything about Jewish appropriation in The Sandman? Maybe I'm wrong or looking too much into it, but I've been wanting to watch the show, but just saw the character Mazikeen, who's a daughter of Lilith apparently...? I'm not knowledgeable on the lore or anything, but I really want a second opinion, because that totally rubbed me the wrong way.
I haven't seen the Sandman and honestly don't intend to, so I can't give my opinion on that.
What I do know is that the Sandman incorporates many mythological figures from many different cultures, and whether they're adapted well or not I can't say since again, I haven't seen it and don't intend to.
Here's the thing, having Lilith as a character isn't automatically bad. What's bad is giving the impression that Lilith is a Christian figure, when she's absolutely not, and representing her badly. So if in 'The Sandman' Lilith appeared as part of the Jewish figures, it wouldn't necessarily be an issue. I say "necessarily" because it can still be done badly.
Neil Gaiman is Jewish, however most of his works revolve around mainly Christian mythologies and figures, which is why I'm wary of Lilith appearing as a figure in 'The Sandman'. However, I haven't seen the show and don't want to, so I can't give my opinion on the depiction. I can only talk about the potential issues.
non-jewish spinoffs like christianity and islam are way more appropriative of judaism than any lilith devotee could ever possibly be. But its always the easiest most marginalized minorities people go for in attacking
I’ve seen a lot of misinformation (and harassment) about this so since so many are wondering:
Lilith is open.
You do NOT have to meet a rabbi and to begin the conversion process.
Lilith is jewish in origin.
LILITH IS OPEN.
u don’t need to convert and it’s not appropriation to use her name in your own worship. steer clear from recreating jewish medieval apotropaic bowls to ward OFF AND AWAY lilith and u should be good. Oh wait sorry I know u probably weren’t going to do that, ward off and away an entity you worship, but so many here act like that’s what popular practice. yeah, them saying that REALLY is so twisted, antisemitic, and untrue;
LILITH IS NOT CLOSED!
AND ITS ANTISEMITIC TO SAY SO!
This idea that its antisemitic to engage with Lilith unless you’re jewish, and if you aren’t you have to begin the process of conversion to judaism for Lilith IS ANTISEMITIC. WHY DO I EVEN HAVE TO SAY THAT. tldr; it’s antisemitic to say that Lilith is closed, Lilith is open to all.
