Another Lillian Lark book recommendation for the weekend: Tangled Wires Lilian Lark's Tangled Wires is a standalone science fiction romance with an engaging plot, a convincingly flawed and relatable lead, a small but intriguing cast of complex and believable characters, the simmering of dark romantic and sexual tension, and a beautiful prose style. Even as it uses the genre conventions of gothic and dark sci fi romance, the execution and style of story-telling is wholly original. What struck me about this novel is its heartfelt sincerity. This not only extends to the author's sensitive but pithy exploration of mental health but also to her engagement with issues integral to the genre she is writing in. Even as Evelyn tangles with the mind-games played by the Vigilante who appears to be increasingly obsessed over her, she and Jeremiah have to face the likely much more dangerous copycat killer who the Vigilante has inspired. Evelyn struggles with the mental scars of her traumatic childhood while trying to make sense of her own strange attraction to the vigilante. Lark's dark and complex enemies-to-lovers romantic thriller is a well-paced, engaging and memorable story that approaches the conventional tropes of the genre with a fresh eye. It offers unique and innovative solutions to the problems that works in this genre often run into.
