im not even kidding. i got sick in the stomach and had to cover my face with my hands multiple times when i listened to this album. jay mccarrol rock songs ššššµāš«š¤šā¤ļø his voice is seriously so beautiful. AND THEN. THOSE SONGS WHERE HE'S LIKE. SCREAMING??? i go bananas actual tears in my eyes. he's absolute music magic to me. i would do Anything to see him play music live. jay please. jay please. i need to just download those songs so i can put them on my playlist. doing that now
Yo, hope this isn't weird but I'm obsessed with your girl! Matt and Jay and I wondered if you had any headcanons for them? :^)
YAAAY okay i don't have a tooon of headcanons because my interpretation of leans more into keeping the canon characters and only adjusting the story when needed. but i will rehash some of the stuff i wrote down before + the other ideas i have. and this is just my interpretation of the figments in my imagination, i would very much love to hear if other people have their own ideas ^_^
they still go by the names matt and jay. however, matt is short for a name like madison, maddie, madeline, etc. jay's nickname is still bird.
their characters/personality are still fundamentally the same in my interpretation. this is specific to mine because it's influenced by how i enjoy girl characters who don't comform to stereotypical girl characterizations, especially in their flaws and interests. like dee in it's always sunny. so girl matt and jay are still just naive, messy, cruel, manipulative, incompetent, insensitive, dishonest, childish, etc. and specific for webseries, they're just as misogynistic as normal matt and jay, but recontextualized as internalized misogyny.
matt is butch and presents herself between masc and androgynous. her outfits are essentially the same as web/tv, but the costumes she wears can be flexible for reinterpretation.
i think both of their disguises and stuff can def be reimagined to reflect their expression of femininity hehe
matt's hair in tv era is about as long as the battle of the bands episode, and during web era, it's maybe two-ish inches longer than that and more messy.
outside of the usual blazer/button up, matt still wears lots of t-shirts, especially in web era. i picture web era layering long sleeves under the t-shirts sometimes. definitely a mix of fitted tees and looser ones + v-necks. still the same ripped jeans as always. very teenage boy type outfits.
jay is femme and leans more into feminine presentation, but shifts a bit more androgynous by the time of tv era. though tv era she also has her cartoon character-esque iconic outfit, her wardrobe is still more diverse in options than matt's. sometimes matt helps her pick out what she wears (even if it's just picking between 2 different color button ups.)
in the web era, jay has shoulder length hair, and in tv era, her hair is a few inches longer and her side part is more defined. by then she definitely found a hair routine that she likes and keeps up with.
i said this in my other post but i like to think webseries jay dressed kinda twee since i think it fits her character of enjoying charming outdated trends and childhood. it also contrasts with the fact that she's a total douche in the webseries, which i kinda like. as she grew up she also grew out of the style and just settled on the stuff that 1. she still owned and didn't get thrown out and 2. what she felt comfortable wearing.
jay likes to wear light makeup like mascara, lipstick, eyeliner, whatever. matt doesn't care for makeup overall and is kinda too lazy for it, but will sometimes use it to cover stuff up when she gets insecure and maybe occasionally experiment with it to keep things interesting. especially for disguises. they've also definitely done each other's makeup.
jay has her ears pierced and likes to wear studs and small earrings. matt had hers pierced as a kid but they closed up. she probably tried to reopen it herself at one point.
matt sleeps in mismatched pjs often, usually a tshirt or tank top and pants (may differ depending on temperatures). they both have pj sets but jay is more likely to wear matching stuff.
my truth is that neither of them bother with shaving and matt doesn't bother with bras, maybe a camisole at most. whatever
overall jay cares much more on average about her appearance than matt because she cares about attention and being perceived as cool. matt kinda just has enough confidence to not care. but she does tend to seek validation and will only freak out about her appearance if a comment gets made that causes her to spiral about something.
in my imagination, jay is bisexual and matt is a closeted lesbian. specifically, she is still working through her own personal denial and acceptance. this is more relevant for webseries era, because by the time tv comes around, they rarely talk about romantic or sexual relationships. by then, either matt is out to jay as a lesbian or still in the closet but jay respects matt's privacy and/or just doesn't pay any mind to it.
web era jay would regularly hook up with both men and women, but only dated men (matt's brother in this interpretation.) i think jay would have sex with women more often as an outlet for her attraction but hesitancy to commit to a gay relationship, especially due to social stigma.
matt didn't have a ton of success with others and would get hung up on jay's relationships out of a place of jealousy & insecurity from internalized misogyny/homophobia.
in things like the b-day, matt tried to woo guys in the city, but didn't really put her heart into that. i think the valentine's day short would be an attempt to make jay jealous and be another action of trying to get with men.
to me, matt's kinda nervous what jay would think if she came out as a lesbian. in my mind, jay would have the same exact "it doesn't matter to me" that matt felt towards jay dating her brother.
their internalized misogyny remains reflected of the era and the type of media they consume being definitely more male-centric. they're still really immature even as they grow, but by the tv era they're at least a little more mindful and have found more acceptance in themselves.
when they get their periods, it annoys them because it tends to postpone whatever awesome plan (that will totally work) they're trying to execute. times when they sync up are miserable but also an excuse to get snug on the couch and watch movies all day.
this can apply to normal matt and jay too but i think that they do duo halloween costumes a lot. i think they'd do something like bill and ted. but also i just like bill and ted
i think that a lot or most of the other characters in ntbts stay their respective genders. i think it would be funny if they were convinced in the web era that jay's impression of an obviously old man vince valence was going to trick people.
tony is still a mystery to me in my mind. the girl version of tony is something i cannot decide on.
in halloween episode when they switch bodies i think they totally start doing catty impressions of each other.
girl ntbts is so homoerotic childhood best friends relationship because isn't that just the sapphic truth. shakily raises a cigarette to my mouth
Where would one watch NTBTS? I'm enthralled by this silly fellow.
ehehehe here's a link!
the tv show could only be watched on a google drive/internet archive for a while, but with the movie release, the distribution rights to the tv show got bought. so ALMOST all of the unofficial uploads of the episodes have been taken offline as it's in the process of moving to streaming i guess. but this upload still exists! there's also this uncensored version if you have an internet archive account.
Hii ! Not really an ask but I remember you from my drawception days about 6 or so years ago .. i always thought your art so pretty and its so cool to see how your artstyle has developed since then!! I hope you have a great day !!
AHHH THANK U š„¹š„¹ā¤ļø this is so funny bcuz occasionally i do have the passing thought "i wonder if there's still drawception era ppl who see my art" lol, i certainly sometimes see people i knew from like, 2017-2019 posting their stuff!!! i was a totally different person back then and probably at my peak young-and-obnoxious-on-the-internet at the time but that's okay lol. drawception was so fundamental to me as a person and it's so crazy when i recognized drawings made with the drawception tools get posted on meme accounts or something, i'm like "do they know..." LMAO. it's sad that when i made a new account back in 2021/2022 to play it again, it was abandoned and dyiiing!!! i just looked and it seems like last year reed sorta brought it back to life which is lovely.
Who do you feel are Mattjays respective muppets.. same with Brett and Jemaineās muppets
The people must know
matt and jay have always been fozzie and rowlf to me (optimistic eccentric performer who is always trying and always failing and cares deeply about friendship + easygoing sleepy and a bit sarcastic piano player with a high tolerance for mischief) but they're also very much bert and ernie. been meaning to draw matt and jay with fozzie and rowlf for like a year now lol
bret and jemaine ... i can't quite place at the moment because i haven't thought about them like that before š¤š¤ bret kinda reminds me of bean a little. they give more the energy of 2 humans while murray, dave, and mel are the muppets. walter is too much of a sweetheart but his muppet obsession would fit mel LOL. i think it makes sense for murray to be scooter. also dave is rizzo
this was the review i left on my third watch. some other thoughts now that more time has passed:
i've been so thrilled that people actually like this movie. i've been slightly insecure that i'm ridiculous for being so into something so random and niche in the greater sense. like i feel confident that it's really that good, but occasionally i'm like "ohhhh but is that just me." i'm not the type to force my friends to watch the stuff i like. i post and text about it but i never drag people into it. so it's insanely affirming having friends across the spectrum of interests and personality (though all within the same age range) enthusiastically enjoy it. i'm like "you see why i've been geeking out over it for a year now!" and they understand, or at least respect it lol. yes it has a cult following, but so many people who don't know shit about it have fallen in love with it. that's amazing to me. sometimes i still feel stupid but i need to learn to take the view that matt and jay have about ntbts where it's like "you think it's stupid? it is!!! and we like that it is!!!"
people have been talking about how it's a movie with no pee break and they're so right. it's 100 minutes and not only is every scene important, but every scene is GOOD. i feel like there's a 90% chance you'd get lost if you went to pee during it LMAO. it's wild how much they're able to cram into that thing. they're calling it the most tightly written movie ever and it's an improv movie
i remember when i first watched the movie i was like "i think all of the black and white memories are hilarious but i feel like there's one or two too many" but i take back that statement. i quote majority of them all the time. the only one that's not super duper funny is the first one, but it's kinda brilliant in that it sets up the memories as a Thing that they do and then the memories get progressively more absurd and inaccurate (which, by the way, i am obsessed with the concept behind them being how the characters emotionally perceived their memories. even if they're not what really happened, it's what it FELT like really happened. genius.)
i definitely have more thoughts stored somewhere in my brain but i'm struggling to come up with them. and people are always welcome to comment or dm me if they want to talk about the movie or the show, i love to hear ppl's thoughts especially because i always find myself thinking about new things š
one of my longtime favorites is keith haring. louis wain and alison bechdel r both very cool as well. i just finished my renaissance-modern art history course this semester and i basically really like any art movements from the 20th century, though 1900-1930 & 1960-2000 are my preferences. that mid-20th century period has never been my thing in terms of art, fashion, etc. i have quite a few online artists i really enjoy, but one of my favorites for a long time has been worthikids.
I LOVE ITTT i think it's adorable... the characters designs are soooooooooooooooooooo cute like actually the cutest ever. bird is a ridiculously good jay design. and matt ouuugh matt WOULD be a mischievous monkey it's so perfect for him and i have very strong feelings as a monkey enthusiast that it can be difficult to make cartoon monkeys look appealing but this knocks it out of the park with such. cutie little monkey design waaaah..
everyone go awwwwwwww... it's of course not the most impressively animated show in the world but i think it's so sweet as an out of comfort zone exploration into animation & family media. im looking forward to the next animation project they do, i love how fondly matt and jay talk about it. it takes the ntbts formula but makes it soooo chill and laid back which i appreciate for a kids show lol, not overstimulating in the slightest. i love that bird is characterized by the jay trait of loving attention.. we know i love that ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø i love their little dot eyes and when they gain sclera to be expressive that's a design thing i adore
