Lily Ko: UEP Thesis Award Winner, 2019
An Equity Analysis for MBTA’s Automated Fare Collection (AFC) 2.0
Lily Ko’s thesis is an outstanding example of combining qualitative and quantitative analysis to provide analysis and insight into the equity issues involved in the MBTA's (public transit agency for greater Boston) plans for upgrading its automated fare collection system. She wrangled and analyzed a voluminous amount of transit fare data, surveyed best practices of other transit agencies, and engaged community and municipal partners. The methods she developed can be built on by others in the future and she was able to provide sensible recommendations for the MBTA based on strong evidence.

Abstract
The MBTA is implementing a new fare payment system, AFC 2.0. One major change to speed up service will be going to a cashless model. Fareboxes will be removed so riders will no longer be allowed to pay with cash on-board and will be expected to reload Charlie Cards pre-boarding.
