Hermes:my character brings your character good news (or vice versa)
The cold didn’t bother Linako quite as much; still, she couldn’t deny that she was already looking forward to that mug of hot tea Kazuko had promised when they got back inside.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, dear, it’s been unseasonably warm for March up until now, hasn’t it?” Linako smiled, trying to soothe the dark raincloud she could almost see forming over Kazuko’s head.
“It hasn’t been any warmer than it usually is right before winter decides to come back for a little encore,” Kazuko scoffed. Linako sighed softly, deciding not to press her any further for now.
The morning air was crisp and cold, the earth still damp with the memory of frost. The two of them had bundled up and set out in spite of the chill, plastic sheeting in tow, determined to save the new flowers they’d just planted for the spring. A few lingering bits of ice on the ground crunched softly as Linako knelt to inspect a row of pansies, trying to straighten out the cold-shriveled leaves as gently as she could, only for them to curl back into themselves again.
“Poor little things… they’d just started budding, too.”
She winced in empathy as she plucked a few especially damaged leaves off the plants. It was a shame, really, after all their hard work. With the plastic sheeting, they could keep the garden from getting any more damaged, but there wasn’t anything they could do for the plants that had already been hit by the sudden frost. She dug through the underbrush, looking for a good place to put a garden stake, when something under a cluster of brown leaves caught her eye.
“Oh? What’s this…?”
Meanwhile, Kazuko struggled another oversized sheet of plastic, draping it over the rose bushes and growing more and more frustrated each time it fell too crookedly for her standards. She huffed and crossed her arms in exasperation.
“Linako, would you mind helping me with-“
“Kazuko, wonderful news! Come look at this!”
Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion as she wondered what could possibly be so exciting about those dreadful pansies she’d ended up wilting out of her own carelessness. Sighing, she made her way over, gingerly kneeling next to her friend on the cold ground when Linako brushed a few leaves aside and motioned for her to look closer. She nearly gasped in surprise when she saw a tiny, bright green sprout shooting up where the dead leaves had been.
“The leaves from this other plant must’ve kept the ice off it while it was growing… almost like a mother keeping her child safe from the cold. Isn’t that beautiful?” Linako’s beaming smile was infectious, and Kazuko felt the corners of her own mouth turning up in response.
“That’s probably not the case. I’m fairly sure they’re not sentient, for one.”
“Well, that’s true, I know… don’t tell me it doesn’t cheer you up even a little bit, though.”
“…I suppose it does.”
They knelt there until the comfortable silence that fell between them was broken by a sudden gust of freezing wind. Laughing in surprised exhilaration, they covered up the rest of the garden as fast as they could before hurrying back indoors for a mug of hot tea.
(i hope linakos characterization is ok orz it was so fun writing garden buddies though u,vu ty brella for prompt)
Basically, I really wanted a UST for this song, so I tried to make one & it ended up taking too long & someone beat me to making & releasing one (plus it sounded infinitely better than mine) so ;.; I gave up, but I recently decided it's best to finish what I started. I'm not gonna give out this UST, there are still way too many errors with it sfgsdkhfg.
