on a crisp halloween night, sugar strolls home in her angel costume, tipsy from a fun party, unaware that malachi—a vampire cursed by the bite of a mutated bat—prowls the streets, his heightened senses drawn to the sweet scent of her blood. he watches from the shadows as she pauses to adjust her heels, her delicate neck exposed, and the hunger inside him surges.
in an instant, malachi pulls her into a dark alley, his grip firm but careful. sugar giggles, unaware of the danger. “a little dark for a costume, don’t you think?” she teases. malachi’s fangs flash as he leans closer, her pulse quickening in his ears. he could take her, he could consume her, but her innocent laughter stops him cold.
“great costume,” she says, and for the first time in centuries, malachi hesitates. her sweetness softens the beast within him. his fangs retract, and he gently walks her home, torn between desire and an unfamiliar need to protect her.
when they reach her apartment, sugar thanks him softly, then presses a kiss to his cheek. “you’re a real gentleman,” she smiles, disappearing into her building.
malachi stands frozen, his hunger still there, but now something else stirs within him—hope.
