He tried to laugh it off. Of course he did. That was so like him, to make light of something as devastating as this.
But she could see right through it. She could see how this was eating at him. And it killed her.
Three days ago he vanished.
Three days ago she got the news and felt like she might be crushed.
Three days ago she decided there wasn’t a force on Earth that could stop her.
In the early hours of the morning she’d finally found him in an Equalist prison. Injured. And stripped of his bending.
He clung to her then, but tried to get after her for coming at all. “They’ll find you,” he’d said. “I’m not worth it if they find you. This city needs you more.”
But she was having none of that, and whispered her reassurances that she was okay and he would be, too. She kissed him, first on the lips, then on the forehead, and told him he’d be alright. She had a plan, she brought backup, they were getting out of here.
Now he was in the hospital, the same hospital where they met those weeks ago. She blamed herself completely. Amon’s little lackey, the Lieutenant, had flat-out told her they did this to get to her. “You’re too strong for us to get to you directly. So here’s a warning. Back. Off.”
She responded by throwing him against a wall and bursting into the prison.
But Relav was smiling and laughing and joking now. She hadn’t gone and gotten him broken. She would never forgive herself if she did. He was made of tougher stuff than that, of course, as much as he denied it.
But he had lost his bending. She couldn’t even imagine. That was what she could tell was hurting him the most. She’d occasionally catch him just…looking at his hands. Knowing they’d never heal again…
No. This couldn’t be permanent. She’d find a way to fix this. She would.
They let her stay the night at the hospital. And when the rest of the staff finally left the room, she’d crawled into his bed laid her head on his shoulder. He was tracing small circles across her arm, occasionally placing light kisses on her forehead.
“I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry.” She whispered.
“Don’t be.” He said. “You saved me, didn’t you?”
“No, I didn’t. I was too late.” She laid a hand on his chest.
He chuckled. “You’re so hard on yourself, Lin. I’m alive, aren’t I? And so are you. I’d say that’s a success.”
He lifted her chin until he could lean down and capture her lips with his. When he broke away, he kissed the top of her head. “I’ll be okay,” he said into her hair. “I will. So you need to keep fighting. You can’t let this happen to anyone else, you got that?”
