Lin Cheung (UK), 'Pearl Necklace - Matinee', necklace, 2018, freshwater pearls, gold.⠀ ⠀ "Pearl necklaces have a distinctive character – I cannot think of a more ‘traditional’ form of jewellery that every culture would recognise. The inspiration for this piece started with a pearl necklace my mother gave me that I never wore. I felt it did not suit me and I do not believe in only one kind of femininity. It sat on a shelf gathering dust so I carved it into a pearl chain that I would wear and perhaps also removing any gender associations by transforming it in this way. Each pearl is hand carved with every other pearl reassembled to form chain links – much like the tradition of working Whitby Jet chains in the 19th Century."⠀ ⠀ Lin Cheung is a senior lecturer in Jewellery Design at Central St Martins University of the Arts, London. She is the winner of the 2018 Françoise van den Bosch Award and the 2018.
