Master Chief was a blank slate character: you were him.  He had a personality and you understood how he worked, but ultimately he was there as a bridge for you to go through the story.  Again, the Halo series was made by Bungie, who kept the old-school first-person shooter feel to things (and you were often a silent protagonist in those).
