On Sunday 15th August 2021, viewers of the ABC were transported back in time to 1986, through the time travelling magic of a particular television programme.
A deliciously vintage vapour wave ABC indent added to the illusion, and we were shown visions of Paul Hogan accepting his Australian Of The Year induction, as well as the sparkling fresh face of a hopeful newsreader, watching his story back in awe, before the tape jammed spectacularly.
We were also introduced to a star newsreader with her hair as high as her ambitions, realising that the story she had been promised had been handed to her male costar in a last minute change, and viewers could almost see the steam coming from her nose, and rightly so.
These two would become entwined through the events of this episode; through the unfolding story of the Challenger mission that ended in a devasting explosion of flames, and an implosion that both of them shared which immediately made them inseparable from that moment on.
It’s hard to believe that The Newsreader has been a part of the Australian television landscape for five years now. Half a decade! The show which covers Australia’s television past is now Australian television history within itself, and for us devotees, a part of our own history too.
How lucky we were that so many wonderful ‘turbo nerds’ came together and crafted such a beautiful story, which has connected other ‘turbo nerds’ around the globe together through a shared love of this story and friendships that have lasted the distance.
Who would have thought that the show that I became so attached to during a cold winter in lockdown would change who I was forever. I will always be grateful that The Newsreader became a part of my life’s story, and that all began with a three, two, one, this evening, half a decade ago.

On the 16th February 2025, S03E03 of The Newsreader - Behind The Front Line - aired traditionally on the ABC, which was one year ago today!
Dale Jennings had issued out invitations to his 35th birthday bash, and had prepared his house for a lavish reception for his party guests, coming to celebrate this milestone for the King Of News.
But even on one’s anniversary of their trip around the sun, the world itself doesn’t stop spinning. That morning, Helen Norville had awoken from a very rough but clarifying evening, to Bill reporting that there was carnage in Tiananmen Square. No one was quite prepared for the catastrophic imagery that Tim Ahern had patched through to them, and worst still, Public Eye’s reporter, and Tim’s boyfriend - Lee Zheng - was unaccounted for.
As Lindsay blew his top in front of Dale’s party guests about swanning around with canapés (he had not been invited), Public Eye had beaten News At Six to breaking the news of the massacre in China, complete with exclusive footage that News At Six would not be able to compete with.
In yet another blow to the network’s news programme, their undervalued producer Noelene Rickards decided that she must jump this sinking ship and was provided a life raft by Helen; an invitation to join a team which would value her ideas and contributions. She had suffered quietly at News At Six for years, and as she exited her old workplace, she did not go quietly, letting Lindsay know exactly what she thought of him and letting him own his mistakes with a dashing of public humiliation.
