Mathematical analysis of Barney's Dating Function

Today I think I'll talk about the very important laws of relationships, as laid down by the king of awesome, Barney Stinson, in the Bro Code. The code says that I should not under any circumstances allow girls to know of its existence, which is exactly why I'm discussing this in a math blog. Girls will never look here.

The code states that a chick must be at least half of the bro's age, plus seven, in order for her to be a valid dating match. If gis the girl's age andbis the boy's, we can express this relationship in the following inequality:

This can be seen as a shaded region of the cartesian plane:

But remember that this graph is only a gauge of whether or not she's old ENOUGH. How can we tell if she's too old? The best way, I think, is to take the inverse function. That is, you have to be half the girl's age plus 7. Or, she has to be younger than twice your age, minus 14.

Let's graph this on the same axes, then modify the valid region.

So the shaded region is the intersection of the two sets I described above:

Now, all you need to do to check if you're compatible with your significant other is to plot your ages as a point on the graph and see if it's in the shaded region. For example, the blue point below is if I was 17 and my hypothetical partner was 21, and the purple one for two years later, when I'll be 19 and my partner would be 23.

This means that I may not be able to go after that cute 21 year old, but by extrapolating into the future by passing a line of slope 1 through our point, I can see how long I have to wait until I can try.
