凌飞 Ling Fei, 只有思想在流动 Only the Thoughts Are Flowing, 1980

Hey I just came across your blog and I love it. I’ve been an vivid HZGG fan since 1999, when I visited China as an 8 year old. Just wondering how you view Ling Fei. She was my favorite outside of the 4 mains (and more even used to rank higher than Erkang). But now growing up I can’t stop being kind of bothered by her behavior in 1 especially. Rewatching 1 i cant get rid of the feeling that ling fei actually didn’t care about XYZ and ZW but was more concerned to be in favor of the emperor.
I had a brief discussion about this previously, but yeah I definitely think at the beginning Ling Fei had ulterior motives in treating Xiao Yan Zi well, but I don’t think it’s such a bad thing, because obviously part of it is self-preservation. She sees that Qian Long believes this girl to be his daughter, so of course she’s going to treat her well, regardless of her own actual feelings towards Xiao Yan Zi and/or Xia Yu He. It’s just the practical approach considering her position and the Fu family basically take this stance in the beginning as well. You can’t really expect Ling Fei to truly care about Xiao Yan Zi out of the goodness of her heart after just taking care of this injured girl who appears from nowhere for ten days.
Looking at the bigger picture, at this point in her life, Ling Fei had been in the palace for maybe 20 years and realistically she probably didn’t rise from being a palace maid to her current position by being a doormat and senselessly trusting people. It would be very naive of her if she actually trusted Xiao Yan Zi without question and invested her feelings in her straight from the start. Also, however brief Qian Long’s fling with Xia Yu He was, he still regrets her years later and that can’t have sit well with Ling Fei if we believe she actually does genuinely cares about Qian Long. I have a lot of headcanon about Ling Fei’s conflicted bitter feelings about Xia Yu He at the beginning of the series.
Honestly both Ling Fei and Huang Hou’s behaviour in the first series were realistic, and Huang Hou, despite being the antagonist, had legitimate reasons to be suspicious of Xiao Yan Zi and Zi Wei. It’s only in series two that Qiong Yao throws all rationality out the window and have Huang Hou and Rong Mo Mo being completely moustache-twirly evil just because.
