A few requests rolled into one
The one about how Cas's behavior is attenuated both by trying to model himself after Dean and Jimmy is here.
💬 0 🔁 34 ❤️ 46 · Dark night of the soul for Cas occurs in s10-s12 · So, I've seen some chatter that Cas's look in season 10 was somehow in
I think there's been a lot of ire aimed at Cas's so-called "woobification" in seasons 10-11, which okay sure. But I think some of it, a LOT of it in addition to trauma, is performance too, in wanting to "be something he's not" -> be something he views as loving, like "Jimmy Novak" or "Dean Winchester."
It makes a lot of sense in this context because Cas is struggling with the mission to heaven versus wanting to be on earth. He's "lost" because he doesn't yet have a Mission (TM) that will "allow" him to do both (Jack). Also, he's still struggling to embrace his own harsher, angelic nature as a force for good. ("Our powers can be good." etc etc)
"Like the pimpmobile, emulating the look of Jimmy doesn't fit. He'll leave both behind, because he's Cas."

The one where after his prayer, Dean literally looks around hoping that Chuck or Amara has had mercy on him and returned Cas is here:
💬 0 🔁 77 ❤️ 148 · The thing is, that when Cas DIES, Dean is always LOOKING for him. He'll always be looking for him. Underneath his façade
This one hurts so good. Maybe one day I'll get better captures. I had a bit of fun making up poetics in the landscape, but you get the gist. And the gist is:
DEAN PRAYS AND THEN WOUNDEDLY LOOKS AROUND FOR CAS.

Everything we've ever wanted script bit freeform is here:

TLDR; Dean gets his djinn dream. It's Mary, but not the Mary he imagined. It's a lover, but not the lover he imagined.
Which imho feels into our immature ideas/ideals of love versus the complicated reality of them. Others you didn't ask for:
(1) The abstract versus the reality of love that you discover.
(2) Sylvia Jones and Carmen ramblings.
(3) Carmen and the youthful idea of the dream partner.
(4) How season 12 is the "real-life" version of Dean's djinn dream.
(5) Sirens and the immature illusion of "JUST LIKE ME!"
