Summary: Ginny is overthinking. Luna helps her get rid of the Nargles. (First day of my Femslash February fics! This ship is one of my all time favorites. I hope you enjoy.)
Ginny and Luna were studying by the lake. Well, Ginny was re-reading the same paragraph of her textbook for the tenth time, while Luna was sitting by the edge of the lake, talking to the giant squid. Ginny could faintly hear her apologizing to the squid for how the other students teased him, and it made a fond smile curl on her face.
“I thought you had a Potions essay to do,” she called.
Luna turned around, her hair rippling over her shoulders like the waves of the lake, and she smiled sheepishly. “I wrote about a page of it, but I got distracted.”
Ginny gave a fond chuckle. “I’m not having much luck either. My mind is in a hundred other places.”
Luna looked back to the lake, offering a lofty wave towards it (presumably for the squid), then rose to her feet and plopped down beside Ginny once again. “What kind of places?”
“Quidditch, our OWLs, you know,” she replied. There was one thing she didn’t mention, though: Her crush on her best friend, a certain blonde Ravenclaw who befriended giant squids. It was a double-edged sword, studying with Luna, because while it was a great excuse to spend time together, Ginny never seemed to get any work done, because she was busy stealing glances.
Luna nodded sagely. “Nargles can also contribute to that, you know,” she said.
Ginny smiled fondly. “Can they? Well, I must have a pretty bad case then. Is there a cure?”
“Thinking happy thoughts,” Luna replied.
Most people took what Luna said with a grain of salt, but not Ginny. Even if she didn’t believe in all those funny creatures she described, she wasn’t going to discredit the concept either. Besides, could it hurt to think of some happy things now and then?
She allowed her mind to wander. She thought about how Gryffindor won their last Quidditch match, and the Outstanding mark she received on her last Charms essay. She thought about the treacle tart she’d eaten last night and the smell of Luna’s hair. She thought about leaning in and kissing Luna’s lips right then and there, without an ounce of fear or worry.
“Are they starting to clear up?” Luna asked, pulling Ginny out of her daydream.
Ginny smiled. “I think so. Thanks, Luna.”
A rare, mischievous smile curled on the Ravenclaw’s face, and that look alone was enough to give Ginny goosebumps.
“Are you sure you’re happy enough? I don’t know if the Nargles believe you…” Luna said, scooting closer.
Giggles of anticipation were already threatening to spill from Ginny’s lips, but she made no effort to run away. It was something that she and Luna did often, this sort of dance where Ginny pretended she hadn’t been practically begging for it, and Luna obliges her silent demands without pointing out how much Ginny wanted it.
Fingers made contact with Ginny’s sides and wiggled furiously, causing the ginger girl to collapse in a fit of laughter. Luna followed her in earnest, giggling along.
The two rolled around in the grass for a moment, grappling for the upper hand, but Ginny didn’t put up much of a fight, allowing Luna to launch a very effective attack on her stomach, and the Ravenclaw only stopped when her friend’s laughter grew slightly breathless. Then again, Ginny hasn’t asked her to stop.
Ginny was sprawled on the grass, cheeks flushed and hair a mess, and her chest heaved as she caught her breath. “Think the Nargles are gone now?” she asked, grinning.
Luna nodded. “I think so. Your laugh probably scared them away.” Although it sounded like a teasing statement, her tone was matter of fact, and her expression seemed deadly serious.
With a fond shake of her head, Ginny sat back up, pushing her hair out of her face.
“If they come back, I’d be happy to tickle you again,” Luna said.
Ginny’s blush deepened, gaze fixed on her own knees. “Thanks.”
Luna leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to Ginny’s red cheek. “Anytime.”
It’s different now they share a bed. It’s different now they share a life. It’s different now Luna is not in her blue trimmed uniform, wrapped in a brown tatty blanket. Luna is in their bed, in their house, and she wears soft silk nightgowns in pastel colours with thin lace straps. Her hair is even longer than it was before and Ginny wakes up with it on her face and in her mouth and tickling her shoulders and arms.

I clicked for the somnophilia.
I did not expect to walk away with so many feels.
“It sounds lovely. Being woken up by your love.” - excuse you how dare you I'm crying??
Oh gosh. This piece is just plain gorgeous. The "organized chaos" that is Luna, and just how fond and mesmerized Ginny is of her. Just?? Sorry, I don't have proper words for this one because my brain completely shorts out just thinking about how lovely and sweet and sensual this work is.
Mayhaps some angsty linny in their hogwarts years?
hi bee! thank you so much! i hope you like it <3

Ginny found Luna sitting on a log near the edge of the Forest, shivering despite the thin jacket she’d remembered to throw on in her desperation to be alone.
She had been sitting there for at least an hour, but her sniffles seemed incredibly loud in the few quiet moments where Ginny stood before Luna’s bowed head.
“Please don’t cry. I hate to see you cry.”
This was the worst part by far: Ginny, hovering, helplessness painted across her face. “Sorry,” burst out of Luna’s mouth before she could help it, and then another round of bottled-up sobs seared through her chest, pushing a strangled cry from her mouth.
“Did someone say something to you?”
Something like anger flickered across her face, so Luna grabbed her hand and pulled her close. Ginny relaxed slightly, but her brows were still furrowed. The treatment of Luna by other students was a sore topic for Ginny - Luna usually didn’t mind so much, but Ginny’s protectiveness always flooded her with warmth.
Not now, though.
She doubled over, hands snaking into her hair in a painful grip. “Fuck,” she muttered, relishing in the harshness of the word. This wasn’t her. This wasn’t her at all. “Sorry. No one said anything.”
A hand came to rest on Luna’s lower back, hesitant, almost afraid.
“My mom,” Luna said, wiping furious tears off her cheeks. They almost burned in the cold Forest air, but she liked the feeling. This is what it feels like, she thought, to be alive. “I see her all the time but I just can't - I can't hold on to her."
“Oh, Luna.” Warm arms wrapped around Luna from behind and she sank back into the embrace, cold tears streaming down her face. Luna gripped her like a lifeline. “Do you want to talk?” Ginny asked softly.
Luna shook her head, willing the tears and the ugly snot and the pain in every single crevice of her body to go away.
If she tried hard enough, she could almost remember what it felt to be held by her mother like this. Tightly, as if she was something to be kept and protected.
“I love you,” Ginny whispered. Luna closed her eyes and let her head rest on Ginny’s neck.
.
This was the thing about Luna: she was always a little bit hollow.
Every day, she carried the locket with her mother’s face in it and learned about her favorite creatures and loved them with everything she had inside of her. Every day, she loved and loved and convinced everyone else that she couldn’t feel the bombardment of glass shards chipping away at her.(That’s what Loonies did. They deflected that kind of pain). This was the thing about Ginny: she was filled to the brim with light and warmth.
“I love you,” she said again when they reached the Ravenclaw dorm. Tears threatened to fall at those words, but Luna blinked them back and smiled shyly. Even after several months of dating Ginny, she wasn’t used to the unguarded affection.
They were settled on Luna’s bed, curtains drawn and voices low. The room was dark, but a sliver of moonlight from the window peeked through and bathed their faces in a gentle light. “I love you too,” Luna whispered, watching Ginny’s face light up almost immediately. She pulled her in for a soft kiss, letting her arms rest on Ginny’s soft waist.
“I’m sorry,” she said when they pulled apart.
“What for?”
Luna slumped back against the bed, pulling the covers up to her chin. “I don’t know.”
“Please don’t be.” The words hung suspended in the air for a moment, until Luna’s loud sniffle broke the fragile bubble protecting them. “You can’t be strong for everyone all the time, you’d explode.”
This was another thing about Luna: she didn’t understand how Ginny’s words could be true when she was held together by string. “I miss my mom,” she said, long past caring about how whiney it sounded. “I…” she trailed off, her sentence ending in a sigh. “I don’t know. I know she’s still with me, but I can’t always feel it. Sometimes I just wish I remembered more about her.”
Her fingers were wrapping around her locket before she even realized it, and Ginny’s warm palm came to rest on hers. Ginny had always been the strong one. Luna never vocalized this, but she felt it in every embrace, with every booming laugh she let out.
“I wish I was strong like you,” she heard herself murmuring into the pillow, quiet enough that it felt like a secret. Maybe it was. Ginny whispered something, but Luna was too tired to make out any words.
On days like this, very little mattered more than the exhaustion buried deep in her bones. All Luna had left of her mom was her locket and the knowledge that something within Luna had disappeared the night her mom died. She wasn't sure what it was exactly, just knew deep down that something irreplaceable had been lost. No matter how deep she dug her heels into the ground, the wind was stronger than she was.
Ginny’s arms were so, so warm…
“I love you,” she heard again, whispered in her ear so softly she might have imagined it.

Luna had been one of Ginny’s first friends at Hogwarts, and as the two girls matured, they had only grown closer. For years they had considered each other their best friend, spending practically all day, everyday together. If they weren’t together, they wrote letters to each other, eager not to miss a single moment in the other’s life. When they were thirteen, the two had accidentally synchronised their cycles and spent an entire weekend in bed together playing cards and eating chocolate. When they were fourteen, Ginny had broken her leg playing quidditch, and Luna had carried her books for her the entire following week, despite Ginny’s leg having been easily healed by Madame Pomfrey. When they were fifteen, Luna had told Ginny of a muggle practice called stick and poke, and the two had sat on the redhead’s bed a little after midnight under the glow of a lumos spell; giving each other matching heart tattoos on their ankles. When they were sixteen, the two had spent the summer after their OWLs repairing the Lovegood family home, which had been sitting in need the entire year after the battle. When they were seventeen, Luna had gotten her Muggle driving license, and so she and Ginny had spent a whole weekend over the Christmas break driving around Wales, and had to spend a night in the car park of a pub when the snow had gotten too bad; refusing to apparate home. When they were eighteen they celebrated their NEWT results with a family meal at the Burrow, Xenophilius in avid conversation with Arthur whilst Molly dozed with Teddy on the sofa.
The rest of the family had taken to the garden, drinks in hand, laying on blankets as they drunkenly chatted. Ginny excused herself, needing a moment alone from the ruckus. She climbed the stairs, all the way up to the attic; where amongst the boxes and cobwebs, she could look out of the window in the quiet and watch the stars. She pulled her long red hair into a high pony, rubbing at her neck as the joy of the night thrummed in her veins.
“Stars is watching the stars.” A quiet voice murmured, and Ginny turned to see Luna walking towards her, a carefree smile on her face. The Gryffindor was hard pressed to find something she loved as much as the nickname her best friend had given her after she had realised Ginny’s freckles looked like constellations.
“Indeed I am, Goldie.” Ginny threw her arm around Luna, watching her as she gazed out of the window, the moonlight on her face. “You’re so pretty.” She murmured.
“I’m lucky to have found my soulmate so early.” Luna whispered, eyes not leaving the sky.
“What do you mean?” Ginny’s eyebrows knitted together.
“Some have to wait years for their soulmates, some never meet them at all.” She shrugged. “I am incredibly lucky to have found mine.” Luna turned her big blue eyes to Ginny.
“You reckon I’m your soulmate?” The words came out more quietly than Ginny expected, her heart racing.
“Why wouldn’t you be?” Luna searched her eyes and Ginny found herself stuck for an answer. She supposed that Luna was as close to a soulmate as she’d ever get - what with their almost perfect understanding of each other. She couldn’t picture ever being so close with anyone else.
“What if you start dating someone? You can’t very well go and tell them I’m your soulmate.”
Luna nodded thoughtfully to herself, looking around. When she finally looked back at Ginny, her words pierced the quiet fiercely, despite her quiet tone. “I suppose I’ll just have to date you, then.”
“Me?” Ginny squeaked, her arm falling from around Luna’s shoulders - but the blonde caught her hand.
“You love me, don’t you? I love you.” Luna said plainly.
“Well, of course-”
“Would you kiss me?”
Ginny’s mouth opened and closed silently, like a gaping fish. Even after all these years, Luna still surprised her. And yet, the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to. Ginny had held her when she cried, had walked hand in hand with her more times than she could count, had fallen asleep on Luna’s chest so many times at school. And now, as the Ravenclaw’s features were lit up by the light of the moon, Ginny looked at her soft pink lips, and couldn’t help but reach out and trace them with her thumb. Luna leaned into the touch, giving the Gryffindor a small smile.
Ginny leaned forwards, kissing her softly, feeling the hairs raise on her arms. This was nothing like kissing Dean, and nothing like kissing Harry. The room seemed to disappear around the two girls, and when Luna placed her hand on Ginny’s face, kissing her back, sparks seemed to fly around them. The redhead had never felt her magic as strongly as she did then, the tingle of it growing stronger by the moment as she pulled her best friend closer, their chests pressing together. Luna let out a little sigh when she did this, and Ginny was sure she would die right then and there, hearing that sound in this context. She pulled back, resting her head against the blonde’s.
“That definitely felt like a soulmate kiss.” Luna whispered, smiling brightly at her. Ginny giggled, amazed at how the night had taken a turn.
“Yeah, it definitely did.” She leant back down, pressing their lips together again.
“Gin, are you in here? The others are-” The attic door swung open, warm candlelight pouring in around the silhouette of Percy. “What in Merlin’s name are you doing?!” He squealed, taking in the sight of the two girls pressed together. They pulled apart, looking at Percy with wide eyes.
“Oh, Percy. Sorry, um, we were just-”
“You’re disgusting! What’s wrong with you?!” He stormed forwards, pushing Ginny away from Luna.
“Disgusting?” Ginny’s voice came out small, suddenly feeling ten years old as her older brother glared at her.
“And here I thought you were just best friends, but this?!” He shrieked, waving his arms around. “This is just unnatural. What are you, a lesbian?”
“I.. I don’t know. But it’s not, we’re not unnatural!” Ginny tried to keep her voice strong, but tears pricked at her eyes as the horrible words of her own family sunk into her skin.
“We’re soulmates, Percy. We love each other. I’m sorry if you can’t understand that.” Luna’s soft, calm voice carried around the space as she stood beside Ginny, lacing their hands together. “ I hope one day you can find-”
“Oh do be quiet, you loony cow.” He spat, aiming his attention at her.
“I think it’s you who should be quiet, Percy.” George appeared in the doorway, walking into the room. “I don’t know what is happening with our baby sister, but I do know any decent member of this family would show her the love and respect she deserves.”
“She’s gay! Are you going to come in here and tell me-”
“Yes. Yes, I am. And I’m sure every single person downstairs would agree with me. If Fred were here, he’d hex your bollocks off.” George used his few inches over Percy to lean over him, his voice firm. “She is our sister, it is our duty to try our best to love her, even if she does leave her dirty laundry everywhere.” He winked at Ginny, and she felt some of the tension leave her.
Percy shoved past George, storming down the stairs. Ginny opened her mouth to speak, but George held up a hand, a knowing smirk on his face. “Since this wasn’t a planned coming out, I’ll keep it to myself. But if you’re not downstairs in the next ten minutes, you forfeit your chance to play in the quidditch game.” He turned around, but just before he could disappear through the hallway, Ginny called out.
“Thanks, George.”
“No worries, Gin. At least I know you won’t be getting pregnant any time soon.” He chuckled at her mortified face before leaving with a salute.
“I do love your family.” Luna whispered dreamily, leaning her head on Ginny’s shoulders.
“Did you really whip out the soulmate card to Percy?” The redhead asked, shaking her head with a smile and she turned to face Luna.
“It’s true, though, my lovely stars.”
“Mmm, I suppose.” Ginny murmured, a twinkle in her eye. “My moon.” She added, before she kissed the blonde. She briefly wondered if things would change much between the two of them now, but realised that they already did everything that a normal couple would, except the sexual side. And if that’s what Luna wanted, Ginny would be more than happy to oblige.
someone commented on a linny drabble I wrote ages ago and said “it was pretty good but it seemed like they were just friends” 🤔 yes I too spend every day making out with my ‘friends’ while painting their nails 😂
Whenever Luna is having a nightmare, Ginny is here to take her in her arms and distract her by brushing and braiding her hair. But while Luna is reminded of her mother, Ginny thinks of something else entirely.
