85. Tell us about your most epic story involving Magic.
I’m just going to copy and paste from the post I made about it a long time ago:
Played Two-Headed Giant Commander with some friends today (2HG + EDH = {shared 60 life total, 31 lethal commander damage, 15 lethal poison}).My friend and I were both playing Elf tribal (he bought the green C14 deck, I have a Rhys the Redeemed deck). Our other friends wanted to see how their artifact decks would fare against us (One has a really mean Sharuum of the Hegemon combo deck, the other has an optimized Daretti, Goblin Pope deck). After quite some time, it became apparent that neither team was drawing board-wipes, though in all honesty I don’t know if any deck ran that many. Things were starting to look grim for my teammate and I. The other team had used Arcum Dagsson to tutor both of their Darksteel Forges. I had played a Genesis Hydra into Nacatl War-Pride, then attacked the next turn and gotten three tokens of it that didn’t get exiled, thanks to Rhys. Then the Sharuum deck got out a Ring of Three Wishes that was used to tutor, among other things, a Platinum Emperion and a Steel Hellkite. He’d also played a Leonin Abunas. Luckily for me, I had an Archetype of Endurance. My other opponent got out a Silent Arbiter. So, there we were, facing annihilation from the other team’s flying Steel Hellkite (knowing a Magister Sphinx was about to hit next turn). At this point, my teammate and I were hoping to be able to Voltron Rhys for commander damage, but neither of us had a way of giving it trample. We did, however, get a Coat of Arms. I had been making several tokens by this time, so any one particular creature could make it through for lethal if given the opportunity. Unfortunately, only one creature could attack, nothing could get past their blocker without trample, and the other team’s life total couldn’t change. We needed a miracle or we would lose next turn. And we got it. Not a card with a miracle cost, mind you, but I top-decked the ONLY card in my deck that could save us: Mercy Killing.I made the Sharuum player sacrifice his Platinum Emperion. He got eight Elf Warrior tokens. What happened next was glorious, because we used their own Silent Arbiter against them. I attacked the Sharuum player with one of my six Nacatl War-Pride tokens, which spawned 12 more tokens tapped and attacking. Since the tokens never “attacked” but were instead created attacking, they slipped past the first part of Silent Arbiter’s abilities; the Silent Arbiter prevented our opponents from blocking more than one of the 13 Cat Warriors headed their way. We didn’t even bother counting up the damage. It was at least 400 damage.Goes to show how sometimes you just get really damn lucky. My teammate also only had one possible card that could answer the situation we were facing (Wave of Vitriol).
