Morosini Fountain in Heraklion Crete Greece
Did you know .. ? The imposing Fontana Morosini (or Heraklion's Lions) was commissioned in 1628 from Crete's Venetian Governor Francesco Morosini. It was not built for aesthetic purposes, its mission was to deal with Heraklion's water shortage and to bring drinking water from Mountain of Youchtas (approximately 18 kilometers away) The water would come through a complex network of pipes. After the monument's restoration, there have been efforts to reveal the Venetian underground ducts and make them visible to people passing by. It is worth to mention that at the top of the fountain, people would see a colossal statue of Poseidon, a masterpiece that unfortunately is now lost. So, if you are at the city, make sure to stop by and admire the nicely decorated lions.
