Lippo Memmi was a follower of the Gothic style of his brother-in-law Simone Martini. His work is conservative and hews closely to the Byzantine tradition that was passing out of fashion by his day. This fresco comes from a cycle of New Testament scenes in the Collegiate Church of San Gimignano.
