*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Gabriel Martin is the oldest of seven children and the son of widowed war hero Benjamin Martin, whose contrasting pacifism and reputation drive Gabriel to join the fight for American independence.
Anne Howard has one childhood memory of Gabriel turning her teeth black with ink, but she harbors secret feelings for him that only grow stronger when he brings his soldiers to her town for supplies.
Gabriel and Anne are separated for the majority of their courtship, writing letters and spending quiet evenings during his rare furloughs, but as their love grows more serious and the war rages on, they realize that they dare not wait until the end of the war to act upon their feelings. Their courtship and subsequent marriage are sweet and genuine, but the threat of war looms ever closer, and the young lovers may only have a short time together before their future is severed.
