SoYeahDuh Style Gif Party! #CBNMemberLove
It's a new week and there is absolutely NO better way than to start than some SoYeahDuh lovin'. Scratch that--anything is a good excuse to check out SoYeahDuh. If you aren't familiar with Chicago Blogger Network member, Lisa Frame's Chicago-based gif blog (THE being the operative word here considering it's the best one out there), then you need to be. Considering the way SoYeahDuh swept the interweb off its feet (wires? routers? you pick), before Lisa revealed she was the genius behind the gif blog, it's no surprise that local boutique, Edith Hart, asked Lisa to host an event at their store to celebrate the launch of their new online store. This event wouldn't have the SoYeahDuh stamp of approval without some awesome internet weirdness. Be prepared (fully charged iPhone type of prepared) to dress up in killer digs, eat, drink, and make your own STYLE GIFS. Yes, yes--style gifs...just when you think life can't get any better, it does! RSVP only so be sure to secure a spot and hope to see you there!
Cool Off at Black Dog Gelato
DATELINE: June 27, 6:30 pm. My lady and I were craving adventure after dinner. I asked her if she was in the mood for anything and she promptly responded, "gelato."
My mind quickly sprang into search mode. Now living in the South Loop, there aren't a lot of legitimate gelato options in the immediate vicinity. Also, if you consider Whole Foods' gelato legit, you need to seriously re-evaluate your sense of taste.
I recalled having seen a post about Black Dog Gelato on Lisa Frame's #SoYeahDuh. The owner, Jessica Oloroso is pictured left. Admittedly, I don't make it to Roscoe or Ukrainian Village enough, so I thought it would make a good adventure for us.
Upon arriving on Damen & Chicago, beginning to head north, I was immediately concerned that this place might be carved out of some semi-abandoned auto repair garage. My whole perception of anything west of say, Halsted, is that it is completely Hipsterfied and therefore not my style.
To my surprise, however, Black Dog is located on the Southeast corner of Damen and Iowa, with a quaint presence that could easily be overlooked... which is partially what makes this place a gem. The other factors include some of the best and most unique gelato I've ever tasted, friendly and outgoing staff, and price.
Here's the rundown: When you walk in you are enthusiastically greeted. This is a key indicator to me, of the value of the patron to the establishment. On your left is a gelato case with what seems like a limited selection of gelato. But it's not.
We sampled to our hearts' content and I was amazed by the maple bacon's surprising and cayenne-like kick, thanks to the rendered bacon fat. I settled on a large cup of the banana fudge and chocolate, and my lady ordered the blackberry lime, chocolate, and cinnamon sugar. The one drawback to the whole experience is that my gelato was gone too fast!
Gelato should be creamy, flavorful, and light, leaving you satiated yet not feeling bloated or weighed-down. Black Dog's gelato is just that, and when coupled with some very impressive flavor profiles and sensations, delivers a very memorable experience.
The bottom line is that you need to go to this place, and you need to go now. There are currently two locations: Damen & Iowa, and Damen & Belmont, where Bleeding Heart Bakery used to be. Once they're out of gelato for the day, they're out, so go early. Black Dog Gelato is another Chicago start-up that is quickly becoming part of our city's identity, and we can all feel good about supporting a growing local business that delivers quality.
When you go, be sure to tell them that The Chicago Snob sent you.
Everyday, we hear about another amazing thing coming out of Chicago. It makes us everyday think about moving to Chi-City.
Mugshot Monday is another one and we are working on a good mugshot to submit.
you can't get unless you give. ...and you have to give without wanting to get.
