Show and Don't Tell: 3 Social Media Visual Aids Worth More Than 140 Characters
By Arianna Green Social Media Manager at SocialKaty, Inc.
The days of the World Wide Web when you send tweets to your favorite brands or celebs, or reconnect with long lost friends of the past, are slowly diminishing. What we really love to see, even more than people we know and love, are images of those expressing how we really feel on the inside. (Disclaimer: you still have not escaped the wrath of a breakup on Social Media, though now the feelings are just in animated form.)
It's time to acknowledge the obvious: Visual aids are taking over your Social Media stratosphere and will continue to unless this great nation stops doing comical or innovative things to capture images of.
Here are three visual aids that are taking over your Facebook/Pinterest/Tumblr feeds as we speak:
1) Infographics
(Source) We barely text or read anything over 140 characters online nowadays, so infographics makes sense. If a business can share an Infographic that easily explains the evolution of an idea or product, it will hook an audience that much faster than a block of paragraphs will. The use of color doesn't hurt either!
2) Gifs
You've seen a ton. They're everywhere. Every news item or pop culture event this millennia has been made into small animated images called "Gifs", and they are now flooding your RSS. The trend has given rise to what are called Reaction Gif Blogs that take memorable and satirical (and increasingly niche) topics, and pair them with an equally amusing pop culture gif. Don’t know what we’re referring to? These Tumblrs capture the best of them:
What Should We Call Me So Yeah Duh How Do I Put This Gently? 3) Branded Images
(Source)
"Branded Images" influence Social Media fans and their friends by compelling them to interact with and re-share your posted content, in turn creating brand awareness. It can be something funny, something beautiful, something compelling, or even something written in an interesting typeface, but what they all have in common is a logo.
So how does the rise in visual these benefit you? Aside from comedic relief or compelling drama, they boost traffic. Content creating websites are now “the most visited websites since the birth of Pinterest in 2010”. Furthermore, according to knowyourmeme.com:
Internet [visuals] have risen in popularity with the rise of Internet Culture as more and more people identify with and participate on the Web as their primary method of expression and content consumption.
WIN!
The important thing to remember is that visuals can't be tasked to drive profit, but it can drive your brand personality. By piquing interest, fans and followers will want to investigate your Online Persona more and if you have a great product, then guess what? You’ve just met a new customer. Here’s are the next steps to see if online brand visuals can work for you:
Don’t step outside the box too much. Success comes when you capitalize on an existing phenomenon. Put your personal spin on an expression, image of a sartorial character, by placing your captions within them.
Post it! You never know if you don’t try, and if it’s only successful within your fan base without accruing new ones, then you now know what your fans love to see.
Try different themes and texts to understand what does work and adapt that idea to your Online persona as a whole. Sex may sell, but comedy does too.
Like other trends, these will end too. Find what about your content mostly resonates with your fans once you see the official RIP to this genre of viral content.
Remember: Infographics, Gifs, and Branded Images can be portals to your business, but not the legs for your company to stand on. Use them wisely.
SoYeahDuh Style Gif Party! #CBNMemberLove
It's a new week and there is absolutely NO better way than to start than some SoYeahDuh lovin'. Scratch that--anything is a good excuse to check out SoYeahDuh. If you aren't familiar with Chicago Blogger Network member, Lisa Frame's Chicago-based gif blog (THE being the operative word here considering it's the best one out there), then you need to be. Considering the way SoYeahDuh swept the interweb off its feet (wires? routers? you pick), before Lisa revealed she was the genius behind the gif blog, it's no surprise that local boutique, Edith Hart, asked Lisa to host an event at their store to celebrate the launch of their new online store. This event wouldn't have the SoYeahDuh stamp of approval without some awesome internet weirdness. Be prepared (fully charged iPhone type of prepared) to dress up in killer digs, eat, drink, and make your own STYLE GIFS. Yes, yes--style gifs...just when you think life can't get any better, it does! RSVP only so be sure to secure a spot and hope to see you there!
