Documentation of archaeological site “Lisht” completed

The joint team of the Ministry of Antiquities and the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), the United States, finished the documentation, mapping and 3D topographic survey at Lisht necropolis.

This is an interesting survey. 802 Middle Kingdom tombs located, which is an enormous amount. I’m a little surprised that the article seems to imply that Itj-tawy IS Lisht, but as far as I’m aware, the actual city site has not been discovered. Perhaps just hyperbole on the part of the reporter?

How 2 Massive Carvings Found Near Egypt Pyramid Were Rescued from Looters

Two massive limestone blocks decorated with hieroglyphs and carved images have been discovered beside the Pyramid of Amenemhat I at Lisht in Egypt.

Those really are huge. To be cut up, no doubt, for the illicit antiquities market. And with a lovely image of Seth, too. So glad these thieves were discovered before the pieces went into someone’s private collection, never to be seen again. (Apologies for the poor quality image.)

Garment of Senebtisi - Met Museum Collection

Description:

This garment has a narrow waist because it was intended to adorn only a mummy. Although the design was based on an actual royal ritual outfit, in the late Middle Kingdom this version was also used for elite burials in royal cemeteries such as Dahshur and Lisht. The distinctive lily and papyrus beads signify Upper and Lower Egypt. The royal nature of the outfit connected the deceased with the king and therefore to Osiris, lord of the afterlife.
