Lakeside Walk in County Fermanagh

If there is something I learn about County Fermanagh, it is that it has an abundance of water. A look at the map will tell that the Lough Erne dominates the area. There are numerous rivers and streams which feed into the lake. I thought it would be nice to have a photo of the lake side but I wasn't sure where I can get one. Fortunately, there are several signs which point the way to the water along the main road. It seems that fishing is quite a part of the life of the people here in the county what with all this water.

Castle Balfour

The name Castle Balfour inspires images of a huge forbidding castle and I was hoping that I would see something like that. The village of Lisnaskea wasn't too far from Enniskillen. I was a bit surprised that it wasn't along the main road of the village, we made a turn off the main road and just head straight to the castle. The castle is actually near the side of the Holy Trinity Church which is right beside the castle. The castle unfortunately, is not much of a castle anymore. It follows the fate of a lot of castles I have seen in Ireland. The castle no longer has a roof and much of the site is in ruins.

Going to Castle Balfour

It was my first time in county Fermanagh and I really didn't know what to expect. I do know that that area was a bit of lakeland, so I was hoping to get some nice photos of the lakeviews. Enniskillen was a nice base to start from. It turns out that Enniskillen already has a castle and it seems to be one of those fairy tale type of castles with conical towers. What I didn't know was that Enniskillen Castle was one of several plantation castles in the area. So what exactly is a plantation castle?
