List of Five: Talking Animals
List of Five: Talking Animals
One of my not-so-secret ambitions in recent year has been to write a talking animal story. There are actually a lot of different variations on the talking animal, ranging from xenofiction (where the animals behave as they actually would in real life, and this is reflected in their thought processes) to animals that simply stand in for humans (as they do in a recent book I read, El Deafo). Was tagged by @firstsubtwo to reveal 5 things about myself.
1. I'm 61, and might be the oldest Tumblr you follow.
2. I’ve always looked much younger than my age. During my teens that was not necessarily a good thing. Girls were unimpressed and I couldn’t fake my way into a bar.
3. I’ve always been thin/skinny. This was sometimes problematic but it helped me avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War. I weighed 107 lbs. when I reported for my Selective Service physical. That was well below the minimum weight for my height.
4. I ran track in high school. At 5′9″ I was the shortest 120 yard (we didn’t do meters then) high hurdler I encountered. I once ran in a race against the reigning high school world record holder who was about 6′3″. I beat him to the first hurdle but he was putting on his sweats by the time I crossed the finish line.
5. I grew up in Washington D.C. and went to school with a few children of famous politicians and media members. I learned that people are people regardless of what their parents do for a living. Also, what looks glamorous from the outside is often much less so from the inside.
I tag anyone over 40 years old and anyone who grew up in, or is now living in, the DMV.
